Notes for KEITH LESLIE WILSON:
Keith was born the fourth of seven children of Oscar and Viola Wilson. As a typical youngster, he also relished the sports activities of the Wilson clan. Growing into high school age, his singing voice smoothed into a baritone that was mistaken by a neighbor as a radio on the tractor. After his graduation from high school, Keith enlisted in the US Army, taking his boot training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. After boot camp, he was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, for airborne training. A knee injury that occurred during one of his jumps resulted in his reassignment to armour training at Fort Hood, Texas. After completion of his Texas assignment, he was shipped to Germany. Coming home in the fall of 1963, his next duty station was Fort Leonard Wood....pushing boots through boot camp. It was here that he met the wife and mother of his only son, Michael.

After a short stay at Leonard Wood, he was sent to South Korea for duty. Upon his rotation home from South Korea, it was back to Fort Leonard Wood for an extended time until his reassignment to a unit stationed at Fort Collins in Colorado. In the late spring of 1968, he was designated to a combat unit leaving for the war in southeast Asia. Keith and his unit arrived in South Viet Nam on July 26th, his 26th birthday.

Within 60 days of arriving for combat duty in the war zone, he and his patrol were ambushed by North Vietnamese Army troops just south of the DMZ near Quang Tri. Keith and several of the patrol were killed, and still others wounded. His body was returned to the United States and he was laid to rest with full military honors in the cemetery at the west edge of Marathon.
