FIRE VICTIM REMEMBERED AS DOG LOVER, GREAT COOK

KASBEER -- Shocked and saddened by his tragic death in a fire, grieving friends and relatives consoled each other Wednesday and exchanged memories about Dennis "Moose" Ramos.
      The 50-year-old Kasbeer resident, who walked with a cane because of a childhood hip injury, was apparently overcome by smoke at 2:10 A.M. Wednesday before he could escape from his bedroom in an addition built onto his mobile home.
      "He was a great guy. We were lifelong close friends. He would always go out of the way for people and do nice things for them,: said classmate Terry Johnson of Ohio.
      Ramos and Johnson were 1968 graduates of Ohio High School.
"We grew up together and played football and basketball together. His hip hurt him a lot, but he still wanted to play," Johnson said.
      He recalled Ramos broke his hip when he jumped out of a swing on the school playground and landed on his hip instead of his feet when he was in the third or fourth grade.
      Johnson said Ramos was known by the nickname "Moose" since his grade school days.
      Many area men visited with Ramos while he cut their hair. He graduated from Barber College and was a Walnut barber for 25 years, according to his brother, Richard " Sonny " Ramos of Minooka, who owned the Kasbeer residence.
      " He really enjoyed taking care of his dogs, " Ramos said. The two dachshunds, Billy and Tawny, also died in the fire. Richard's beagle, Tuffy, also apparently died in the flames.
      Jason Ramos of Princeton described his brother as " a real caring man who would do anything for you. "
      For the past three years, he had worked in the fall sorting corn at the Pioneer Seed Corn plant in Princeton.
      Moose and the former Cora "Corky" Karns were married for 17 years before divorcing a year ago. He remained friends with her and her family.
      " He was a nice guy. He called me every day, " said Dolores Karns of Zearing, Corky's mother.
      Corky's sister, Jackie Kernan of Princeton, recalled Moose " was a very good cook " and " He like to talk with all his relatives."
      Kernan, a district circulation manager for the News Tribune, had hired Moose to deliver papers from his vehicle in Kasbeer, Ohio and Walnut.
      " He was so happy to have the paper route," Kernan said.
      This is the second time a relative of the Karns family has died in a fire.
      "It was like a flashback for me. We lost a nephew (Bill Ott) in a house fire in Princeton about 10 years ago," Kernan said.
      Ott and his grandmother, Evalyn Ott, both of Princeton, died in the fire on June 17, 1990.
