Notes for JOSEPH PIQUET DIT LAFLEUR: Joseph Piquet was born around 1675 and was from the "Quartier LaGourdine in the city of Mans (now Le Mans), capital of the ancient Province of Maine, in France. His father, Eustache Piquet was a merchant in Mans dealing in cloth (cloth merchant). The exact date of his arrival in Canada is not recorded but we must assume that it was in the period between the the late 1690's to early in 1705. We know that in his marriage certificate to Therese Merienne, dated Feb. 10 1706, that he declared that he was a soldier in the French Army reporting to the Company of Monsieur Muy (Nicolas Daneau de Muy, Major of the French Troops in Canada). We assume that he came over from France as a soldier trained in France. We also know that he had apprenticed as a shoemaker.. His wife was the daughter of a French soldier living in Quebec, Canada. In the census of 1716 we find him living in the Upper City of Quebec. He is then described as a "Master Shoemaker". In 1719 he signed a rental contract for a house on "rue St. Louis". A year later he left this house but remained in Quebec City. All of their 14 children were born in Quebec but only 8 survived to adulthood. Of the 8 remaining, 6 are known to have married but many moved away. No record of his death has been found but we know that the death certificate of his wife (May 10, 1760) states that she is a widow. I have seen a copy of this certificate. One source claims that he died on March 4, 1764 but this does not agree with this data. My grandfather once told me that he died shortly before his wife, Could the real date be March 4, 1760? The area is not specified but traditionally was North of Montreal going up to James Bay ? Hudson Bay and also included most of Northern Ontario. We know he married because in his mother's death certificate and associated documents his name is mentioned and it is also stated that he was married, although his wife's name is not stated. Could he have been livinging in Acadia in 1755 when the Acadian settlers were deported to Louisianna by their British conquerors? Oral tradition says that there were Piquet / Piquette's in Acadia during the deportation. We do know that there was a Joseph Piquet who arrived in Louisianna in 1756. It is possible that this is him. He could have left many descendants who could have spread to many parts of the USA. Since the Mississippi River was the main transportation route we should look for Piquet / Piquette's having established themselves further North along the Mississippi. Another son, Louis Piquet was also know as Louis Francois. He became an apprentice macon under Pierre Roy (ville St. Laurent near Montreal) under the recommendation of his brother Francois - Eustache. In 1762 he purchased a property at Coteau St. Pierre, a Montreal suburb. In his marriage contract prepared by the notary Coron, on Jan. 15. 1764, it was noted his occupation was Masonry Contractor. I am one of his descendants as are the Piquette's in the St. Paul area of Alberta. We know that Piquette's in Northern Ontario, Michigan and the North East USA (Massachsets) also are his descendants. Another son, Francois established himself in Montreal where he became a wagon maker. He married and had children who also established themselves in Montreal. Another son, Noel established himself in Montreal and became a "voyageur" where he did fur trading in the "West". At that time the French fur traders were active in a " West" which comprised all of Ontario, the Prairie Provinces and large areas in the USA. It included all or parts of the following States; Montana, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and the Dakotas. We have no trace of Noel's descendants except for a daughter who died at birth. It is possible that some of the mixed blood Piquette in the USA could come from his loins. There are also Metis (Mixed Blood) in the Prairie Provinces with the name Piquette. They could be his descendants also. As the voyageur moved around they often took native American wives in several locations and left their descendants behind. There are two adults which we have no records of. Notes for ALCIDE PIQUETTE: Alcide and Adeline operated a grocery store in Montreal from 1900 to 1904. In 1904 they moved to Morinville, AB and resided there until 1908. They moved to St. Albert, AB where Alcide was the Manager of the St. Albert Flour Mill. Later he owned a Meat Market. While in St. Albert he became the first Secretary Treasurer of the town and was also a School Trustee. In 1914, Chevigny Brothers who owned and operated the Chevigny Bros. General Store in Plamondon, hired Alcide as the store manager. The newly formed Plamondon School District 2696 needed a teacher so Adeline was hired as the first qualified teacher (there were a couple of unqualified teachers previouly). On Aug. 6, 1914, the family left St. Albert by train to Athabasca Landing. From there they went by covered wagon on the two day trip to Plamondon. When the store closed in 1923 they moved to a homestead 3 miles south of Plamondon where Alcide farmed and Adeline taught at the nearby Berny School. Adeline died in 1926. Alcide traded the farm for a grocery store in Plamondon in 1929. He also became the village Postmaster and Telephone Operator, all located in his store. He resided in the upper level of the store. He sold his store in the fall of 1943 and retired at that time. He lived with his son Roland & Zea from the spring of 1944 until until 1958 when he moved to his son Jean & Della who lived in Morinville at the time. Lived in Plamondon until 1928. Worked in the mines at Coal Valley, AB until 1933. Then he homesteaded south of Plamondon. He dug a ditch by hand almost 1 km long to drain a lake. Built snowshoe like pads for his horses feet to allow them to work in bogs / around lakes / in muskegs. Then worked several years as a car saleman for L. H. Tremblay of Morinville, AB (Jean Tremblay's brother, Jean is his brother in law. Joined the Canadian Army in 1940 until 1945. Spent the war training soldiers because health problems did not allow him to go overseas. Married Feb. 17, 1947 and started a mink ranch. After 2 years he sold it and built an automotive garageand body shop in Plamondon. He was also had the district John Deere agency. Traded this business in 1953 for a large farm at Donnelly in the Peace River Area of Alberta. Where they farmed for 2 years. Sold the farm and bought a lakeside property about 7 km East of Plamondon. He set up a subdivison known as Bayview Beach and sold many lots. Formed the Pelican Hotel Co. in 1957. Constructed the hotel and operated it until 1968 when his health problems (ephysema) forced him to retire. Retired in Kelowna where he worked part time for the BC Corps of Commissionaires. Moved back to Alberta in the early 1980's and died in Edmonton. See notes Religion: RC Notes for RN ELIZABETH THERESA STANDING: Elizabeth's father was a soldier in WW I. After the war he moved his family to Canada in 1919. Elizabeth was 12 at the time. After arriving in Vancouver they moved north to the Prince George area and established a farm in the forest area at Willow River some 40 km East of Prince George. She completed High School in Prince George and then moved to Edmonton where she enrolled in the Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1931, winning the General Profiency Gold Medal. She then attended Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal where she graduated in 1934 with a post graduate degree in Obstetrics. Moved back to Edmonton where she worked at the Misericordia Hospital. She also worked a year at the Seton Hospital in Jasper AB. In 1939 she became the Provincial Public Health Nurse in Plamondon where she worked for over 20 years. As of Sept. 05, 2000, she resides in the Auxilliary Hospital in Lac La Biche. Unfortunately she lost her hearing several years ago so communicating with her is difficult. Fell and broke her arm and shoulder in March 2002. Died on April 9, 2002 from complications.
