JOHN H. CLAGHORN - GRIFFIN BIBLE
Martin Co. NCTranscribed from the pages of the original Bible by Nancy L. Pittman, Greenville, NC, while in her possession June 2001. Bible is owned by Henry E. "Buzz" Griffin, Jr. Cornelius, NC.
Bible as described by Nancy L. Pittman.
This Bible is very old, pre-dating 1800. It is in very poor condition and very brittle. The title page is missing. Possibly a Scottish Bible or an Isaac Collins Bible, premier printer in New Jersey during the last quarter of the 18th Century, circa 1779, Trenton. The original cover of the Bible is very badly worn, probably while it was in use. It appears to have been bond in leather over buckram. It was recovered at some time by crudely stitching on a hand finished piece of Linsey-Woolsey fabric to the cover. All of this fabric has deteriorated, with the exception of the spine. The pages are yellowed (brown) due to handling and exposure to light. It is a small Bible. It measures four and a quarter inch by six and one half-inch by one and one half-inch thick. Having omitted the Apocrypha books, it is indicative of a "Preacher" or clergy Bible. Three pages have been folded in half, and very crudely sewn into the middle of the Bible, between I Samuel Chapter xxviii v. 3 and v. 4. The stitching penetrates the spine of the Bible, to the outside, and several rows of stitching can be seen along the front and back covering of the spine. Possibly to keep the Bibles binding from detaching from the rest of the book? Old printed paper with war news is glued inside the front and back cover. Although the paper is very badly worn, portions of its articles can be read. It states: "Orders have been issued to the Colonels commanding the U.S. quota of militia in Clarks and Daniel's division, as well as to one company in Warren county to have their detachments immediately organized and ready to march to the place of rendezvous in the shortest possible time." The Bibles internal "s" letters are written as "
f ". Family records are inscribed on the sewn in pages.INSCRIBED
