Updated January 21, 2001

About Our Family Research

JUST FOURTEEN YEARS AFTER ABRAHAMLINCOLN FREED THE SLAVES,SAM JOHNSON WAS BORN IN 1877 IN HARRIS COUNTY, GEORGIA. LIKE MOST YONG BLACK FAMILIES GROWING UP IN CRISP COUNTY OF CORDELE,GEORGIA HE WORKED AND LIVED AS A SHARECROPPER. HE GREW TO FREEDOM. HIS PARENTS LIVED DURING SLAVERY.

AS CAN BE IMAGINED, THE FIRST FEW YEARS OF FREEDOM WERE PERIODS OF GREAT SOCIAL TENSION,AGGRAVATED BY DISEASE,HUNGER AND INTENSE SUFFERING. THE FORMER SLAVES,LIKE SAM'S PARENTS,LIVING WITHOUT RESOURCES,WERE HELPLESS AND WITHOUT MUCH FORMAL EDUCATION.IN 1915
SAM WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE TO OLIVIA MATHIS,TO THIS UNION NINE CHILDREN WERE BORN. SAM JOHNSON DIED JULY 12,1937 AT THE AGE OF 60.
