Hiram A. J. POWER of Liverpool, England (1858 - 1932).

About Our Family Research

Harry Bailey POWER and Hiram Alfred Jeffery POWER were christened in St Peter's Church, Liverpool on 9 March 1859.

Hiram married Frances Tarrant FENTON of Birkenhead, Cheshire in Toxteth Park in 1884. They were at 4 Alderson Road, Wavertree in the 1891 Census...two months before my grandfather, Ainsleigh Bertram POWER was born (14 May 1891). In 1910 Bert travelled on the SS Ionic to New Zealand, where he married Elizabeth CAMPBELL in Feilding in 1917; Myrtle Clare CAMERON in Palmerston North in 1928; and Meta Lorraine BENNETT-WHITE in Australia in about 1946.

His eldest son, Ainsleigh Leslie POWER, followed in his footsteps by marrying Audrey Jean GOVAN in Auckland in 1942; Maria Luisa DURANTE in Auckland in 1951; and Mrs Gloria SORRELL in Melbourne in about 1962.

I was surfing the net last April (1999) when I saw a banner from www.familytreemaker.com that suggested I could find my ancestors. I had been looking for Hiram's father, Thomas POWER for about twenty years without success. I input Hiram's name...no luck...I input Harry's name. BINGO!!! All of a sudden I had a third cousin living in San Francisco. It turned out there were four brothers and a sister...not just two brothers like I thought..and Thomas was a Master Mariner and was always at sea. He had been born in Plymouth, Devon...not Ireland like I thought he may have. Ariel told me he had been introduced to his family tree when he was living in Chile, by a Hugh POWER, who had been an Army Officer in Canada, and who had returned to Sussex, England some seven years ago. Ariel said he had not heard from him since then and even though he had written a few letters had never received a reply. Would I please write to him. I did and included my email address. About June I received an email from Patrick POWER living in Plymouth, Devon. He said Hugh, his father, had died in 1993 and apologised to Ariel for not contacting him earlier. We are now looking for Mathew POWER, Thomas' father. He was a Mariner and married Elizabeth FISHER of Appledore, in the Parish of Northam, Devon on the 28 October 1807. Now...November 2004.....we have found that Mathew was born in Waterford, Ireland in 1787 and became a Master Mariner in 1811. We are still following his career and have him aboard numerous ships up to 1831....so far. Oh....he was the Mate on the ship Hiram between 1808 and 1810! Still looking and hope to find his resting place soon. Whether it be through the cross to the crown or by just plain hard work we will find his birth place and his resting place too.
