Includes NotesNotes for Charles G. Peterson:

A long and useful career came to a peaceful ending Monday morning when Charles G. Peterson, one of Attica's prominent citizens a generation ago, died at his home on Peterson Hill, near the eastern end of Summit Street. He was 88 years of age and had been very feeble for the past six or seven years. Death resulted from the infirmities of age.
The funeral was held Wednesday at 2:00 o'clock, the Rev. Bergur Nelson of Rankin, Ill., preaching the funeral discourse. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Mr. Peterson was born in Grenna, Sweden, Jan. 31, 1828 and came to Attica with a party of emigrants in 1854. In the same party was Miss Christina Johnson, who afterwards became his wife. Mr. Peterson had served an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the old country and upon his arrival here obtained work at making coffins. This was during the cholera epidemic and he was thus employed steadily for three months. Later he formed a partnership in the wagon making business with David Smith. During the years that followed he was engaged in various enterprises and by industry and frugality accumulated a competence.
He was married to Miss Johnson in Attica Dec. 31, 1857 and they began housekeeping in the brick house on Bond street opposite the old cemetery. Seven children were born to them and of these three are still living. Frank, the eldest, was killed in a boiler explosion some twenty three years ago and two others died in early childhood. The living children are Mrs. Oscar Lindburg, of Warren County, and the Misses Sophia, Minnie and Amanda, who are still at the paternal home and who gave the aged father the tenderest care throughout his declining years. For several years he has been very feeble and this placed a heavy responsibility upon them, but they met it bravely and cheerfully.
Mr. Peterson was one of the founders of the local Swedish Lutheran Church and for many years was its most prominent layman. The family contributed more liberally than any other in the congregation, the ground on which the parsonage stands being one of Mr. Peterson's gifts to the church. It had become a custom with him to make an annual birthday offering consisting of as many dollars as he was years old and this he continued until his death. For more than fifty years he served as a deacon of the congregation and for a long time conducting services on Sundays when the pastor was absent.
The Peterson home was noted for its hospitality and many a homesick young emigrant fresh from the old country found a haven there until he was enabled to get a foothold in the new world. Many Swedes of the vicinity, now well-to-do, remember with gratitude the assistance given them in those days when they came here penniless. Many of them placed their savings with Mr. Peterson for investment or safekeeping and no one ever charged that he defrauded them of a penny. He was a man of keen insight and good judgement and his advice was often sought, not only by those of his nationality, but by others of his friends and neighbors all of whom held him in the highest regard.
