In 1969 I decided to gather our family info and write our family history and 32 yrs later I am still gathering information and have decided there is no stopping place so will compile what I have.

My Raines info was gathered from South Carolina Alabama,Mississippi,Arkansas and Oklahoma
From Census records, Court records, cemetaries , Civil war records. Bible records and older Descendants
Our first proven ancestor was James Raines born 1793 in South Carolina.
He had at least 1 Brother, Robert, born 1786 in South Carolina.
Proof of their parents names are unproved at this writing but am still looking for documents for proof.
They are on the 1840 census of Walker Co Ala living with their son,Robert, who never Married.
Every census up until 1850 just list name of Head Of Household.then ages of males and females living in the household.

It lists:

1 male bt age of 70-80
1 female bt the age of 70-80
Robert was listed as bt. 40-50
They died before 1850 in Walker Co Ala.
On the 1850 census Robert was living with James and his Children
He died bt. 1850-1860 in walker co.
Robert filed for government land in 1833 and James Filed in 1834 @ Sipsey ,Ala Walker co.
James remained on his land the remainder of his life.
I have'nt proven when they left South Carolina but was in Ala. In 1818.
James married Milla Barton in Lawrence co Ala Oct 6 1818[have his marriage record]
She was born 1803 in South Carolina to Moses and Fannie Barton.
James and Milla came to walker co in 1822 with the Moses Barton Family.
James and Milla had 9 children:

Milla died 1843 and is buried in the Sardis Cem near Rispey,Ala. Her homemade stone is still readable after all these years.
James remarried in 1850 to a Widow named Susan[ Surname unknown] she had 1 son ,John, born 1845[he is listed as Raines on the 1860 census [which was a common mistake made by census takers ] James and Susan had 3 Daughters:

James died 1871 in Walker Co .Ala. Have not found Susan after his death and as she was several yrs younger than James she probably remarried.

William Bailey Raines
William Bailey was born 1819 in Ala. He was the first-borne of James and Milla Barton Raines.
He Married 1841 to Elizabeth K. Kennemore. She was born 1812 in Tenn. Parents are unproven at this writing.
William and Elizabeth had seven children, all born bt 1842-1854 in Walker Co Ala.

They moved into Jefferson Co ,Mud Creek Township in 1849 and stayed there a short time then moved back to Walker Co.in 1850
In March 1869 They left Walker Co and on their way to Ark. They stopped in Wayne co Tenn until Oct 1869. then moved to Boone co. Ark. Rolling Prairie Township. Arriving there Nov 1869
BEFORE THEY LEFT Ala. Mary had Married Christopher Loggains
Milly had married Steven [Christophers uncle] Robert Had Married Louisa Haskins[Johns Sister]
When they left AL Christophers widowed Mother, Sarah Mullens Loggains and her children left with them. Also John and Louisa Haskins Orphaned Brothers and Sisters came too.
There was 22 Members in this family Wagon train when they left Walker Co. For some reason they stopped in Wayne Co Tenn . It may have been that Milly and Mary was having their babies. 2 new babies were born in Wayne Co. When they arrived in Boone Co. There were 24 Family members. Another was born 3 wks after they arrived in Ark.
Mary"s husband Christopher "ran Off with the midwife" when Christopher Jr. was born in Tenn.
In 1970 I was fortunate to meet the Grandaughter of Milly and Steven Loggains who was 91. And the son of Robert Raines.who remembered a lot about our family.
Christopher Loggains Sr, supposley changed his name after he left and the family never heard from him again and as this is very likely as I have searched every state 1870-1880 for him with no results.
This family must have been a bunch of Hearty Pioneers as they had to have traveled from Tenn. to Ark. In The Winter months to have arrived in Ark in Nov 1869.with several young children and 3 newborn babies and all survived.
Elizabeth K. Kennemore Raines died 1878 in Boone Co. By then Mary had Married George Haskins. And on the 1880 Taney co. Mo. Census ,William Bailey and his Youngest Son,John Al ,was living with them there.William Bailey died 1881 @ Mincy,Mo. Taney Co.

Robert Raines [Grandson] showed Elizabeths name Spelled Kennymore

My Notes:

Steven Loggains was the Brother of Major C. Loggains ,who was the father of Christopher,Carroll and Hannah. Major was killed Dec 1864 in The Civil war. He was married to Hannah Mullins. There children were: Eliza,Christopher,Carroll,Hannah, Charles,Margaret,James Perry,Major Taylor and Sarah Pamela.
Hamilton and Charity Gibson Haskins were the parents of John W. Louisa,George,Joseph,Charity and Mary. Hamilton was killed in the Civil war mar 1864. And Charity died 1867 in Walker Co. Louisa and Robert Had married by then and raised her younger bros . and sisters until John and Priscilla Married and he brought them to Ark with him . They are listed with John and Priscilla on the 1870 census.

Mary Elizabeth Raines
Mary was born 1 842 in Walker Co. Ala. to William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore Raines.
She married Christopher Loggains 1866 in Walker Co.
Their first child,Sarah Elizabeth Pamela was born there in 1867 She died of Measles in 1879 in Boone Co Ark.
Their second child Christopher ,[Crit] was born in Wayne Co Tenn in April 1869.
This is when,according to elderly family members say ,Christopher Sr."ran off with the midwife"
On the 1870 census Mary and the children are living in Boone Co Ark with her parents and is not listed as a widow, so this story is undoubtly accurate.
The 1880 Ark Mortality Schedule of Ark shows that Sarah Elizabeth Pamela died of Measles in June 1879.
By 1880 Mary had married George Haskins and was living in Swan township, Taney Co Mo.
Living with her and George were Christopher Loggains , William Bailey and John Allen Raines
Mary died 1887 in Boone Co.
Christopher married Sophena Burt Mar 9 1889 in Boone Co . They had 1 son, James Henry .They divorced then Sophenia married Christophers stepfather, George Haskins.and had to more sons, Norb and Orb. James Henry went by the Haskins Name the rest of his life.
Christopher remarried in 2 more times.
#2 Izora Tyler Bannings[a widow]1892 in Independence co ark. Their children were;
[1]James Roy born Nov 8 1894 married Cecelia Eugene Sullivan. Died Aug 14 1977 in Breckenridge,Texas.
[2]Paul William born April 1897 died 1962
[3]Phillip Ward born mar 1900 died 1962 at Spiro, Okla.
[4]Mary Eva Eugena Born 1901 and died age 2 ,Oct 29 1903 in Clarksville ,Texas.
Izora died June 2 1905 in Clarksville, Red River Co Texas.
Christopher then married #3 Emma Rains Carlton. He died Oct 1 1940. They are all buried in the Stone Chapel Cem. In Clarksville.

Priscilla Pamela Raines
Priscilla was born 1843 in Walker Co. Ala. To William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore Raines.
She Married John W. Haskins [See Hamilton Haskins page for his family history] May 8 1869 in Wayne Co Tenn.
Her first child was born 3 months after they arrived in Boone Co.
Their children were:

Coming with them was John Al Raines and Family.
John, Priscilla and their 1 yr. old daughter , Martha died there in a typhoid epidemic in 1899. They are buried in the Three Rivers Cem. between Ft .Gibson and Okay,Okla.

Rispa Francis Raines
Rispa Francis was the Daughter of William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore Raines. She was born 1849 in Walker Co Ala. She married April 27 1871 in Boone Co Ark to Carroll Loggains. She died in childbirth with infant in 1873 in Boone Co Ark.

Milly Samantha Raines
Milly Samantha Raines was born 1846 in Walker Co Ala.
She was the daughter of William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore Raines
She Married Steven Loggains 1866 in Walker Co Ala.[he was an uncle of the Loggains her siblings married]
Their children were:

Robert was born 1847 in Walker Co Ala. To William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore Raines.He Married Louisa Jane Haskins Dau of Hamilton and Charity Gibson Haskins 1868 in Walker Co ala.

Rolland was murdered in 1921 by John Thurman[father of 2 of his son-in laws. ]
Francis came to Paden Ok after his Death.
The Silas C Turnbo manuscripts tells of Robert's death.
He was a correspondent who went around the Ozarks writing family stories.
Roberts death is titled "Cock Of The Walk'
I have this manuscript if anyone would like a copy.
Robert had a history of being a bully and fighting smaller men but in 1871 he started a fight and was stabbed to death in Forysth Mo. After his dearh Louisa married 2 more times
#2 Rueben Southard Dec 29 1874 in Stone Co Ark and had 2 children Charity born 1876 and Joseph Manuel born 1879. After his death she married Frank White and had 1 son ,George Washington White, She is buried in the Chaney Cem Lowry Ark. Boone Co.

James William[Bud] Raines
James was born July 1 1851 in Walker Co Ala. He was the son of William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore Raines. He Married Hannah Loggains,daughter of Major and Sarah Mullens Loggains in 1875 in Searcy Co Ark.
Their Children were:

Note: their son Noel and Wife Alma were @our 2001 reunion.
Bud died of heat stroke in the hayfield July 15 1888 2 months before James was born. Bud and Hannah are buried in the Water Creek Cem.at Freck,Ark.

John Allen Raines

John Al was born Sept 4 1854 in Walker Co Ala. He was the son of William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennemore. He Married may 8 1883 in Boone Co Ark to Mary Elizabeth Bly. Mary Elizabeth was the Dau of Jane Brittain and her #1 Husband James Henry Bly. He died Jan 14 1864 in the Civil war @Keokuk Co SteadyRun, Iowa. The following year, 1855 ,Jane married Calvin Parton and a lot of the records I found the children were listed as Parton. She had 1 sister and 2 Brothers. Margaret,George and John and they received a Pension from The Civil war until they married or became of age. She had 4 half-brothers James Wesley Patron ,Joseph Parton. Charles Parton and Francis Munroe[Pen] Parton. Mary Elizabeth first married William Henry De Jurnette in 1873 in Wilson Co Kansas when she was 13.
They had 2 children

William Sr. Died in Mincy,Taney Co Mo. in 1879.

Note: I have the 1880-1883 Mincy Valley Church Records where at least 75% of the members were Elizabeths Family but she was Excluded from the church in 1881 for Unbecoming Conduct . As she was living in the household with John Al Raines . They sent 3 church ladies to talk to her and she told them to"Do what they saw Fit'. From there they left and moved to Boone Co Ark and married in there 1883.

John Al came to Okla aug 1919 with his married children and died there March 9 1930 and is buried in the Keokuk Falls Cem. there.

Johnny was born Aug 15 1883 in Boone Co Ark to John Al and Elizabeth Raines he married Mary Naomi Amy Rowan May 25 1902 in Muskogee Co Okla.
She was born -1881 in ark. and was the Dau of John Rowan and his #1 wife Martha Ann Hurd,
Their Children were:

[9]Bernice Mae born Aug 30 1922 @ Ft Gibson , married first Wesley Sawyer Oct 15 1943 in Carlsbad,Calif. He was killed on his job with a power company.
Their children are . Bobby,Wesley,Linda,John . Married second Fred Rogers no children
They live in Lowell Ark. And she has been a big help on my research.

Aunt Omie died Dec 14 1946 and Uncle Johnny died Nov 23 1968. They are buried in the Citizen Cem.

Mishap fatal to Fort Gibson Man
John A. "Uncle Johnny", Raines age 87of Ft Gibson died about 10 am Wed. in general Hospital in a car- ped.accident. Investigator ,Dean Beene,with the D.A. office said Raines was struck while crossing street.The accident occurred about1/2 block from the towns only traffic light. Kenneth Smith ,of Ft Gibson was later cited .for driving with improper vision his windshield was covered with ice. Raines was born Aug 15 1881 in Boone Co Ark . He was a retired Stonemason and came to Ft Gibson in 1897. Survivors include 2 sons, bill of Ft gibson,Jack of muskogee 4 daughters Annie Bowlen of South Hampton,Mass and Annis Moydell of Sacramento Calif.Bonnie Bailey and Bernice Rogers of Ft Gibson. 2 Brothers Bob of Lexington Okla and Paul of Okla. City; 3 sisters, Mae Perry of Prague Okla. Viola Van horn of Broken arrow,Okla and Modelia Green of Prague Okla..

My notes. My memories of Uncle Johnny is a tall thin man with the prettiest sparkling blue eyes. He knew where to find any verse in the bible. And was such a happy pleasant man. He was my Hero!! A lot of his stone work still stands in Ft Gibson. He did the work on the old high School there[ I have picture of him working on School]

Mary Lillie Mae Raines
Mae was born May 20 1886 in Boone Co Ark. [Daughter of John al and Elizabeth Bly Raines ] She Married William Henry Perry July 6 1903 in Lead Hill Ark.

Ola was born Oct 15 1888 in Boone Co Ark.[daughter of john Al and Elizabeth Bly Raines]
She Married William M. Van Horn July 15 1906 in Boone co. Ar.

Exact wording from newspaper account of Gordons Death
Gordon H. Van horn 40 of Davenport was killed April 10 1956 in a cave in while working on Davenports almost completed sewer system. Van Horn, son of Mr. And Mrs. Will Van Horn of Prague was trapped in a 12 foot trench when the clay bank collapsed and buried him under 2 feet of dirt. It took Workers 2 hours to recover his body. Van Horn was employed by Doerfler of Oklahoma City. Funeral Services were @ 2 p.m .Thursday, @ Davenport. Survivors include, his wife Jewell ,2 sons Donny and Jackie 2 brothers Melvin of Shawnee and Glenn of Prague 5 sisters Cora Hall of Calif. Mrs. W. D. Collins of Meeker,Lois Martin and Florence Turner of Tulsa and Billie Hutchenson of Okla. City. Buried @ Davenport Cemetary.

Francis Modelia Raines
Delie was born Sept.22 1895 in Boone Co Ark. [Daughter on John Al and Elizabeth Bly Raines] She married Earl Benson Green Oct 26 1919 in Okfusgee Co Okla.

James died in June 1910 of Typhoid Fever and Eurith died in Sept 1910 with Infant. The Orphaned children was raised by the Raines Familys except Audrey who was adopted by John Box.

Milla was born 1839 [dau of James and Milla Barton Raines]
She is the only dau I have not found who she married.. She was single and living with her father on the 1850 census. Not with him on 1860 census So she married bt 1850-60
Margaret Ann [Peggy] Raines. Peggy was born 1842 in Walker Co Ala [daughter of James and Milla Barton Raines . Her mother died the next year. Peggy married William Washington Abbott .[his sister married Hiram,Peggys brother]

Massa was born 1835 in walker co [dau of James and Milla Barton Raines. She Married James B Mullins 1869 in Walker Co ala. They left Ala in 1880s and supposedley moved to Texas.

James Raines
James was born 1840 in Walker Co son of James and Milla Barton Raines.
He enlisted in the Civil War 1862 and I have ordered his records It appears he may have been a war casuality as I have not found him after the war.

Hiram Raines
Hiram was born Oct 1829 in Walker Co. Al, son of James and Milla Barton Raines. He married twice. His first wife was Phoebe[maiden name unknown] They had 3 sons
[1] James married Charlotte Mooney and settled in Neetleton Miss.,[I Correspont with their descendents] died 1924
[2]George married Mary Jane Mooney[Charlottes Sister] died 1898
[3]Hiram Newton never Married. She died in late 1860s and he remarried in 1870 to Aseneth Adeline Abbott[sister to Wm Washington Abbott who married Hirams sister Peggy] Aseneth and Hiram had 2 children
[1] Hiram Howell Married Martha Ann Best[I correspont with their desc.
[2] Milly j. married Wm. Sides.

Hiram lived out his life in walker co and died there in 1914. He and Aseneth are buried in the Curry Cem MaryLee Ala.[have pictures of the stones]

Allen was born 1824 in Walker Co Al [son of James and Milla Barton Raines. He Married Lucinda Robbins 1845 in Walker co.

Allen enlisted in the Civil War sept. 20 1863 and reenlisted april 23 1864 but died 5 days later on Nephritis[ kidney disease] in Bibbs co. Macon Georgia he is buried in the Rose hill cem there. I have a picture of his stone. Lucinda remarried in 1867 to Henry Williams and had 1 child Bertha. She was in Nettleton Ms in 1880 then moved to Texas.

Sinthia Raines
Sinthia was born 1851 in walker co ala to James Raines and his second wife Susan? She married Robert Williams[her 1/2 sisters son in 1888. They had 2 children

Lucinda Raines
Lucinda was born feb. 1854 in walker co [dau. Of James Raines and his Second wife Susan? She Married William Best 1875 in Walker Co. She had a daughter ,Mary born out of wedlock in 1871.

Info on the Perry Family.
Mose Perry was not Blood related to the Raines but the Perrys And Raines have been close since 1897 .
I never knew Mose Perry but thought he was kin to me as my Dad , Bob Raines told me many stories about him and Mose.
He was my Dads best friend . I have a picture of the taken 1916 in Boone Co Ark. It appears the Perry and Raines met in Ft Gibson Okla in 1897.went back to Ark together in 1898. Here is the Data I have found on Uncle Will and Moses Family.
William Henry Perry was born 1853 in Illinois. married #1 Demicilla Reed Aug 3 1873, she died 1876 in Saline Co Neb[its now Webster co ] she died there in 1876. No children. He Remarried May 29 1877 at Pleasant Hill Neb.to Lucy Ann Burch. She was 13. She was born 1863 in Penn.
Their children were;
[1] Noah Hartford born may 10 1878 in Red Cloud Neb. Webster co. Died ----- in Pamona Calif.
[2] Ollie Mae born Nov 4 1879 died feb 29 1880 in Red Cloud
[3] Dora born Aug 1 1881 married Claude Brown died Dec 4 1941 @ Lawton Okla. I child Lucille.

William Sr . died oct 13 1890 in Cloud co.Kansas[not yet proven where]
Mose was 1 month old when he died. Lucy had a very hard life .She was widowed at 27 years old with 4 children and expecting another one. She took the children and went Arlington Okla where her sister Mary Hacker Lived .One of her Horses died on the trip and she hooked the cow with the other horse and Noah and Will lead the cow.[ From Berthas Memorys] She and her Brother-in-law had some Problems and in 1897 she took the children to Ft Gibson Okla.
She worked for Pleasant Porter [Chief of Creek nation] as housekeeper. He had 2 dau and wanted Dora to Become a Companion to them. As Lucy was having a hard time supporting her children she let him have Dora. In 1898 Lucy and her Children went to ark with John Allen and Elizabeth Bly Raines.
Will and Mae s marriage cemented this relationship. Lucy Came Back to Okla when the family did. They all remained life long friends . Lucy died 1935 and is buried at Keokuk.

According to Caldwell Co Mo records It States That Jane Brittain and James Bly married there may 31 1854"passing thru on their to mercer co Mo. [have their marriage record] In Mercer Co three of their children were born;

In 1861 they mover to Keokuk Co Iowa with Janes Parents George and Hanora.
There their last child Margaret was born in aug 22 1862.
James enlisted in the union army -1862 and became sick in Little Rock Ark and was sent home on sick leave in Dec 1863 and died at home Jan 14 1864 in Steady Run Iowa .[ Have a picture of his stone and his complete civil war records Plus minor childrens pension records ] After his death Jane took the children back to mercer co mo with her parents. She married May 1865 there to Calvin Parton, he was a widower with 2 children.
In 1869 the Partons and Brittains left mercer co and Moved To Wilson Co Kansas ,staying there until 1874 then moved to Mincy Mo. Taney co. Her Parents are buried in the Mincy Cem there . they were 1 of the founders of the Mincy Valley Church.
Jane and Calvin had 4 sons.

Hamilton Haskins.

No relation to the Raines except thru Priscilla,Robert and Mary. Hamilton Haskins was born 1824 in Sc ,Son of James and Anna Haskins. He married Charity Gibson July 16 1846 in Campbell Co Ga. She was born 1826 in Sc . They left Ga and went to Cherokee Co Ala as soon as they married.

George Washington Van Horn
George was born 1848 in Illinois. He married Mary Louise Owens ca 1882. They had 3 children

#3 George washington Jr was born 1885 .
His Widow[still living] says he was born in Mt Home Ark. I do not know yet where he and Mary Louise Married. He died before 1900 in Ark and Mary Louisa married Alvin Fisher ca 1905 in Boone Co .
