 Includes NotesNotes for Jacob Read:

In a deposition dated November 17, 1726, Jacob Read stated that he was about 63 years of age. This would have made him born in 1663, corresponding with the baptismal record of November 7, 1663, for Jacob, son of Sister Read. There are other records listing sons or daughters of a "Sister Read". These have been identified as the children of Thomas and Mary Read by the reference to the probate records of Thomas Read. While the records of his estate do not name his children, they do list their ages. Years of birth calculated from these ages are in agreement with the baptisms for the children of "Sister Read" and four year son of 1667 was our Jacob Read, baptized in 1663. No baptisms or births of Read families are included in the Salem records during this time period.

Sidney Perely, who wrote the History of Salem and worked extensively with the early records, concluded that Jacob was a son of our Isaac Read. However, a careful reading and study of those records shows no evidence for that conclusion. Perely may have noted a 1702 land record which lists, "Jacob Read's house and his father's cottage right near Broket's lot". It appears that this lot HAD been owned by Isaac Read, son of Isaac Read (our Jacob's half brother) in 1700. However, it was originally owned by our Thomas Read as early as 1661. This may be the lot referred to in a land transfer recorded at Salem on June 22, 1715 in which Thomas Lewen, Mariner, and his wife Alice, one of the daughters of deceased Isaac Read of Salem, sold house, lands, goods, chattels and estate of her father Isaac Read to her Uncle Jacob Read, for five pounds money. The deed was originally recorded in Boston on June 10, 1712.

When Elizabeth's father's estate was divided on February 25, 1690/91, ten acres of land at "Salt House Point", which is just across the Wolliston River from Salem Town, was assigned to her and remained in her possession until 1706.

On June 18, 1695, Jacob purchased a house in the Northfields of Salem (Middle Precinct), just west of Salem Town just over the present border of Peabody. He is referred to as a husbandman in the deed. He willed this land to his daughter Elizabeth, describing it as a "small dwelling house and lot". Referring to an old map in "History of Salem", it was on the highway from Gardners Bridge and Mill Pond north out of Salem (east of Central Street in what is now Peabody). One month later he purchased a nearby farm lot. He owned these properties until his death in 1745.

Jacob was one of the group of 10 which signed a petition in March of 1709/10 to establish a new church, which was originally called the Middle Precinct of Salem and became the South Church of Peabody. They were to purchase Robert Pease's house and intended to outfit it for the purpose if the community agreed. The petition mentions that no one would be admitted to the community without the approval of the proprietors of the neighborhood. The town agreed to contribute 5 pounds a year toward the establishment of the school in the new "parish" for maintaining "reading, writeing and Cyphering". He contributed to the church building fund in May of 1711 and January of 1711/12. The men and women sat in separate sections of the church and the pew assignments of February 8, 1713/14 indicate that "Jacob Read is seated in ye short seat whare Sam'll is seated. And that Jacob Read's wif is seated with Sam'll King's wife". Jacob served as a collector of church taxes in 1721.

In 1712, Jacob was one of the purchasers of a house to serve as a schoolhouse.

Jacob and Elizabeth both died in 1745. Jacob's will was dated January 5, 1742 and his son Jonathan was his principal legatee and executor of his estate.
