The following article was written by Thomas George Gunning (the great grandson of Margaret Grealish) on May 4, 1999.  It was a language arts project for the 5th grade at St. Jude's School, Atlanta, GA.

 

"When I knew Mammy, she used to just sit in a big brown recliner chair.  mammy was my Dad's Grandmother.  According to my father, Mammy was an enthusiastic Braves fan.

 

When my grandparents were on vacation, Mammy and her husband would watch my Dad, his brothers and sister.  When my grandparents were about to return, Mammy's husband would be in the car with the motor running, racing the engine.  When my grandparents pulled into the driveway, they would leave because they couldn't wait to go.

 

Mammy used to make my Grandmother eat everything on her plate and usually she would be sitting there for hours because she didn't want to eat.

 

When my Dad went on trips with Mammy, she would always carry around a gold-colored Lysol spray can.  Every time they would go into a hotel room, she would spray everything in the room.

 

When they were at her house, mammy always used to scrub my Dad's and his Brother's and Sister's hair in her own sink.  My dad said that he thought his hair would fall out with such hard scrubbing.

 

Mammy had only one child, and she was very devoted to her child who is my Grandmother!  Mammy had five grandchildren.  She really loved her grandchildren and helped them to become good people.  Mammy was a very devout Catholic, and her faith was very important to her.  I chose my Great-Grandmother to write this report about because all these things make her famous to me."
