Updated June 28, 2004

About Our Family Research

This page is dedicated the research of my parents, John Paul and Robbie Wilson (Johnson) Brown's ancestry. The main family lines researched are Adams, Brown, Burnley, Caldwell, Carter, Crowell, Dorris, Doss, Durham, Graves, Gregory, Johnson, Keen, Norman, Reynolds, Rippy, Thompson, Tuttle, West and Williams.

John Paul Brown

John Paul Brown was raised in the Westmoreland and Gallatin areas of Sumner County, TN. He graduated from Gallatin Central High school in 1932, where he was a member of the schools first undefeated football team (earning the nickname "Slaughter House Brown") along with his brother James. Paul then attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, playing football under the legendary coach General George Neyland. After securing his Bachelor degree Paul began teaching and coached the first organized football team at Hendersonville High school in Hendersonville, TN (Sumner County) in 1941. After the beginning of World War II he was drafted into the Navy. He served as a Chief Petty Officer, Ensign and Second Lieutenant. Paul completed courses at the Naval Training School in Fort Schuyler, New York on January 21, 1944. He served for a short time in the North Atlantic until the German's surrendered. He finished his Naval duty on the "Destroyer Escort" ship U.S.S. Knudson in the Pacific. After the war Paul again began teaching and coaching football again, this time at White House, TN. He took over the football program from a local minister in 1946 and led them to their very first victory that year. Under his guidance White House had their first winning season in 1951. During this time period he also earned a Masters of Arts degree from George Peobody College in Nashville, TN. In 1952 he left teaching and began a career in insurance. Paul "eventually returned to teaching (in 1966) because I found that to be more to my liking, but I never got back into coaching". He retired from teaching in 1979. Paul continued his "teaching" by being a lay minister and Sunday school teacher at the McClurkan Memorial Nazarene Church. Paul celebrated his 50th year in teaching Sunday school in 1995.

Robbie Wilson (Johnson) Brown

Being raised on the west side of Nashville, Robbie Wilson Johnson attended Park Avenue Elementary school, Cohn Jr. high and Hume Fogg high school (where she was a classmate of Fannie Rose Shore, later known as Dinah Shore). After graduating high school in 1935 she studied cosmotology and briefly worked at a beauty shop. She was converted during a Revival held by Rev. Mason Lee at the Emmanuel Nazarene Church, where Rev. Gaius Breese was Pastor. She was called by God to preach and entered Trevecca Nazarene College in the fall of 1936. She received her local preachers license on July 12, 1937. She received a diploma from Trevecca's Theological department on June 6, 1939 and her Bachelor of Theology on May 30, 1941. She became an ordained minister that same year. In 1957 she returned to Trevecca to study and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 10, 1958. In September of that year she began teaching at the Bordeaux Elementary School in Nashville. Robbie retired from teaching on January 20, 1979. {Taken from Robbie Wilson Johnson Brown's personal handwritten notes.}

Robbie continued her "teaching" at the McClurkan Memorial Nazarene Church in Nashville by teaching Sunday school until her health began to fail in the mid 1990's.
