The bits and pieces of the Howard family history information that she had collected was fragmented and needed to be organized into one document. She was very proud of her Howard heritage and it was her desire to preserve the family history for future generations. It was her preservation of old bible records, old letters, obituaries, etc. that was the basis of this document. I have also incorporated information that I have been able to obtain from the U. S. Census reports and the other usual genealogy sources available to me. I want to thank those who have contributed their family information and all who have assisted in any way. While I am aware that this family history is incomplete and family members have been omitted simply because I did not have the information, I thought it was important that the information that is available at this time be put into one document so that it would not be lost to future generations. It is my hope that it will serve as a starting point for future family historians who will extend the history of our genealogical line. I also know that when information is taken from so many fragmented sources, that some errors will obviously occur. I apologize to anyone who finds their family information in error. It is my sincere desire that the family history be as complete and accurate as possible. WY DESCENDANTS OF LEVI HOWARD (1798 - 1862) LEVI HOWARD was born 25 August 1798 in North Carolina. His death is recorded in the Howard family bible as 4 May 1862. The 1850 U.S. census lists the Levi Howard family living in Shelby County, Texas. At the time of the census in the summer of 1860, the Levi Howard household had moved to Red Oak, Ellis Co., Texas, with his wife Mary and son Richmond residing there. Levi was helping his son Nathan with the farm near Malakoff, Henderson Co., Texas and he is included in the census household of Nathan Howard. It is believed that he probably died and is buried in Ellis or Henderson County, but a marked grave has not yet been located. Little is known about his early years, but it is believed he migrated to Georgia with his parents when he was very young. He later migrated to Mississippi where he married and started his family. Note: Some of the children of Levi Howard on subsequent census reports indicated the place of birth of their father was Georgia. However, the 1850 and 1860 U.S. census reports for Levi Howard clearly show his place of birth as North Carolina. Levi Howard and Abzilla Rollin were married in Marion County Mississippi. The occasion was recorded in Marriage Book B, Page 131. The marriage license was issued 6 Sept 1830 with the rites of matrimony celebrated 9 Sept 1830 by William Barnes, Associate Justice. It is interesting to note that the county clerk recorded the names as Levy Howard and Absalee Rowland. Seven (7) known children were born of this union. Abzilla died 9 September 1842. Place of her death is not known but is assumed to be somewhere in Mississippi or Louisiana. Children of Levi Howard and Abzilla Rollin: + 1. Nathan Howard, b. 2 Sep 1831; m. Iley, Malaki (sic), Henderson Co., TX. Place of birth shown as Louisiana. + 6. Nancy Howard, b. 5 Aug 1839; m. Henry Webster 29 Dec 1854 in Ellis County, Texas. 7. Sary Emiline Howard, b. 23 Jul 1841. Death date not found in the family bible, but assumed died before 1850 as she was not listed with the family on the 1850 census. Levi Howard married Mary Ratcliff 23 March 1843. This marriage is recorded in the family bible. The 1850 Census, Shelby County Texas, indicates Mary was born in 1807. It appears that Mary Ratcliff was previously married as Elizabeth Ratcliff age 10 is shown in the household on the 1850 Census. Also, the death of John L. Ratcliff (10 Feb 1848) is recorded in the Howard family bible. It is therefore assumed that Mary Ratcliff, widow, had the above named two children by a previous marriage when she married Levi Howard. The fact that her age at the time of marriage to Levi was 36 gives further credence to the possibility of a previous marriage. Mary's maiden name and her parents have not been determined to date. Richmond Howard, b. 20 Sep 1849 Shelby Co. TX Was living with his mother next door to his sister Nicey (Howard) Lambert in Ellis Co., Texas on the 1860 census. Married Mary A. M. Howerton 11 July 1867 in Ellis Co. 1. NATHAN HOWARD was born 2 Sep 1831 in Mississippi. By 1860 he had married Margaret E. (________) and was living at Maliki (sic), Henderson County, TX, census pg 60, Dwlg 595, Fam 576, occupation Farmer. The census indicates Margaret as age 25, PoB AL. Also included in the household was a daughter Abzilla E. Howard, age 11/12ths. Note: Joseph T. Howard died before the 1860 census. Nathan Howard served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Records from the State Archives in Austin, Texas and National Archives (Military Records) in Washington, D.C. provide a record of his service and death as follows: March 1, 1862 - Nathan Howard enlisted in Capt. George D. Manion's Company, Darnell's Regiment, Texas Volunteers, at Athens, Henderson County, Texas. The Muster-in Roll dated March 15, 1862 at Dallas, Texas shows that Nathan Howard was given a valuation of $100. for his horse and $15. for his equipment. This Company was subsequently designated as Company K, 18th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, CSA. January 11, 1863 - Part of the Regiment was captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Nathan Howard was included in the 4,791 Confederate soldiers "missing" mostly captured. He was held as a Prisoner of War at Camp Douglas, IL. April 2, 1863 - Nathan Howard was paroled at Camp Douglas, IL and was one of 451 Confederate Prisoners of War delivered at City Point, Virginia on April 10, 1863. Note: This appears to have been a prisoner exchange by Union and Confederate forces. The next record of Nathan Howard was recorded at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia. He had rejoined the 18th Texas Cavalry and his unit was one of the units that made up Cleburne's Division. Note: For Civil War Buffs, the 17th, 18th, 24th, and 25th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted) was part of Deshler's Brigade, which was a part of Cleburne's Division; which was a part of Hill's Corps; which was a part of the Organization of the Army of Tennessee (CSA). September 19 & 20, 1863 - The battle of Chickamauga was fought these two days. The Confederate and Union armies clashed in some of the hardest fighting of the Civil War. Nathan Howard was mortally wounded during this battle. Although the Confederate Army won the battle a high price in human lives was paid on both sides. The combined casualties during the two days fighting were 37,129. September 23, 1863 - Two days after the battle ended, the death of Nathan Howard is recorded on the Company Muster Roll as follows: "Nathan Howard died from the wounds received at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, September 23, 1863". Children of Nathan and Margaret E. (_________) Howard: 11. Joseph T. Howard, b. 11 Nov 1858, d. 14 Aug 1859. Note: The Howard Bible records the birth and death. 12. Abzilla Elnder Howard, b. 26 July 1860, Henderson Co., TX. 2. ELIJAH SAMUEL HOWARD was born 9 April 1833 in Mississippi. He died 1 May 1916 in Hamilton County, Texas. His grave is marked with a stone in Murphree Cemetery, near Evant in Hamilton County. He came to Texas with the family and was included in the household of Levi Howard on the 1850 Census, Shelby County, Texas. Elijah Samuel Howard enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States March 10, 1862. He filed "Soldiers Application for Pension" #14533 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas 10 July 1909. He certified that he served in Company "G" 20th Regiment, Texas Cavalry CSA, under command of Capt. Bussy. The unit was reorganized as Company "B" of Bass' Regiment Texas Cavalry dismounted. He served about 3 years and was discharged at Palestine, Texas at the end of the war. He was detailed for a period of time to guard prisoners. He moved to Anderson County, TX and married (1) Mary Jane Jones, 21 June 1860, in Anderson County. Elijah Samuel was shown as a Farmer on the 1860 census and his farm at Cayuga was listed between the Jones and Cornwell farms. Mary Jane Jones, the daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Jones, was born 12 July 1835 in Tennessee. She died in Anderson County, Texas and the Howard family bible records her death as 3 May 1862. Children of Elijah Samuel and Mary Jane (Jones) Howard: + 13. Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Howard, b. 30 Sept 1861 Anderson Co, TX; m. James William Daniel 20 Nov 1879; d. 7 Apr 1943. Elijah Samuel Howard married (2) Cornelia Irion Cornwell, daughter of Martin and Mary (Roach) Cornwell, on 21 Jan 1864 in Anderson County, Texas. Cornelia I. (Cornwell) Howard was born 23 Apr 1849. She died in Coryell County; grave marker indicates date of death 27 June 1896 and the Charles J. Kimbrough family bible indicates date of death 27 January 1896. She is buried in the Ater Cemetery, Levita, Coryell County, Texas. Sometime before the 1900 census Elijah Samuel moved his family to Coryell County, Texas. After the death of his wife, Cornelia I., he used the insurance money to buy the place that was being farmed by William Franklin Howard in the valley of the Leon River near Jonesboro. He had hoped that his sons and Kimbrough sons-in-law would come and work the farm. When this did not materialize, he soon sold the farm to his two sons William Franklin Howard and Martin Woodrow Howard. Henry Asher "Ash" Myers; d. 18 Dec 1971. Elijah Samuel Howard returned to Anderson County in 1908 and married (3) Mrs. Emmaline Wilson, 20 Sept 1908 in Anderson Co., Texas. Emmaline was born 6 March 1836 in Alabama and she died at the home of her son S. A. Wilson in the town of Bethel, Anderson Co., Texas 25 June 1935. In 1928 while living at Tennessee Colony, Texas, Emmaline Howard filed a Widow's Application for Confederate Pension (#43764) and was approved to receive a pension as surviving widow of Elijah Samuel Howard. No children born of this marriage. 3. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HOWARD was born 9 November 1834 in Mississippi. He came to Texas with the family and was listed in the Levi Howard household on the 1850 census of Shelby County, Texas. He was included on the 1860 census of Henderson County, Texas with his new bride Sarah (_________). The report indicated they had been married within the year. Benjamin Franklin Howard served the Confederate States during the Civil War. Records from the Texas State Archives in Austin indicate that Benjamin F. Howard enlisted as a Private in the State militia reserve in July 1861. He was assigned to Reserve Company, 13th Brigade, PR. No. 3, Henderson County, Texas, TST, B.G. A. J. Witt, Commanding. Then on July 24, 1862, two months after the death of his father Levi Howard, he enlisted for 3 years as a Private in Capt. Goodgame's Company at Athens, Texas. Records obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. indicates the unit was known in the field as J. W. Speight's Battalion Texas Infantry, but it was officially designated the lst Battalion Texas Infantry by the A.&I.G.O. Capt. Goodgame's Company subsequently became known as (2d) Company "F", 15th Regiment Texas Infantry (CSA). The National Archives military service file is not complete and does indicate whether or not Benjamin Franklin Howard survived the war as it does not show his discharge date. Additional records will be researched in an effort to locate this information. The last entry found in his National Archives file is a Company Muster Roll for Jan & Feb 1864 which includes the remarks "absent, sick at camp near Harrisonburg, Louisiana, 25 Feb 1864". Children of Benjamin Franklin and Sarah (____) Howard: Note: Have not located the Benjamin Franklin Howard family after the 1860 census with exception of his civil war record. It is believed that children were probably born of this marriage but further research is required to confirm. 6. NANCY HOWARD was born 5 August 1839 in Mississippi. She moved to Texas with the Levi Howard family and is listed with the family on the 1850 census in Shelby Co., Texas. She married Henry Webster 29 Dec 1854 in Ellis Co., Texas. The Henry Webster family was living in Corsicana, Navarro Co., when the census was conducted in 1860. His occupation was listed as "Blacksmith" and his age as 45 (b. 1815) with place of birth shown as North Carolina. Children of Henry and Nancy (Howard) Webster (as shown on the 1860 census): 25. Ann Webster, b. 1857. 8. NICEY HOWARD was born 31 Dec 1843. The 1850 and 1860 census show her place of birth was Louisiana. She married John M. Lambert 1 May 1859 in Ellis Co., Texas. The John M. Lambert family was shown living at Red Oak, Ellis Co., Texas on the 1860 census. John M. Lambert was listed as a "Laborer", age 22 (b. 1838), place of birth Ohio. Children of John M. and Nicey (Howard) Lambert (as shown on the 1860 census): 26. M.(ary) Lambert, b. 1860 (Census age 1/12) in Texas. 13. MARY ELIZABETH "MOLLIE" HOWARD was born 30 Sep 1861 in Anderson County, TX. She died 7 April 1943 in Anderson Co. She married James William Daniel, the son of John Henry and Polly Ann M. (Cotten) Daniel, 20 November 1879 at Cayuga, Anderson Co., Texas. James William Daniel was born 23 Dec 1857 in Anderson Co., and died 16 Mar 1900. He died at Roscoe, Nolan County, Texas 17 Mar 1952, and is buried in the Murphree Cemetery at Evant, Texas. He married Samantha Ellen McGehee daughter of William Henry and Mintory (Lee) McGehee in the spring of 1891. Mintory (grave marker spelling) was 14 yrs of age when she married, but her daughters wrote that she would say, "I was nearly 15 when I married". Samantha Ellen was born 13 Mar 1876 in Coryell County, Texas and died 27 Nov 1913 at her home near Evant, Texas. A common stone marks their graves in the Murphree Cemetery just north of Evant. William Franklin Howard was a farmer. He and his family were living on the Mackonelly's place west of Jonesboro, Hamilton County, Texas in 1896. He later farmed the Guildstrap farm located in the valley of the Leon River east of Jonesboro. The 1900 Census taken in June 1900, showed the family living in Precinct #8 of Coryell County. This farm was purchased by Elijah Samuel Howard with insurance money. He had the idea that his sons and the Kimbrough sons-in-law would work together on the farm. This plan did not come to pass so he soon sold the farm to William Franklin Howard and Martin Woodrow Howard. The family lived here until 1907 when they moved to their farm just north of Evant, Texas. Elijah Samuel Howard, Addie and Delphia lived with the William F. Howard family for a number of years and were included in the William Franklin Howard household census of 1900. William F. Howard was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Masonic Lodge. Although William Franklin Howard was a successful farmer with a limited education, he and his wife Samantha Ellen encouraged their children to get a good education. Rector was born 17 Feb 1857 in Georgia and died 5 Jan 1923 at Ben Wheeler, Van Zandt Co., Texas. His death resulted from blood poisoning due to a cut on his leg while harvesting cane. Kathrine Taylor in 1937. Martin L. Howard attended North Texas State Normal College in Denton, Texas 1925-1926. It was while attending North Texas State Normal College that he acquired the nickname of "Doc". The story he related to me was that he worked part time at the infirmary at the college and when help was needed, particularly in the emergency room, he was the only one of the part time help that could work there without getting sick. The nickname of "Doc" was given to him and it stayed with him throughout his life. Martin went to work for the U. S. Post Office at Sweetwater, Texas in 1933. He later was a rural mail carrier in Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. For several years preceding his death he lived at Sylvester, Texas, and was the rural mail carrier at McCaulley, Texas, where he was employed until his retirement in 1968.
