He was born January 25, 1811 in Canaan, Columbia County, New York, and died April 14, 1869 in Marshall County, Indiana.Notes for M

GROVE O. POMEROY (husband to Margaret Smith)
Mr. POMEROY was among the pioneers of Center Township, and was identified for many years with the growth and improvement of Marshall County; he was born in the State of Massachusetts, in 1811, and in 1818 removed to Sullivan County, Indiana, with the family of his father, GROVE POMEROY; he attended school in Sullivan County during the winter, and worked on the home farm during the remainder of the year; he was a young man when he went to Vincennes, Indiana, to finish his education, and, owing to failing health, was forced to abandon this project and return to his home. Shortley after his return, he wedded Miss MARAGRET SMITH, in April 1832. She was born in Cayuga County, New York, and came to Knox County, Indiana, with her father, BASTION SMITH, in December 1818. One month after their marriage (in May 1832), Mr. POMEROY and wife removed to St. Joseph County, Indiana, and during the next three years resided on a farm near South Bend. In the meantime, Mr. POMEROY'S father had settled in Marshall County, and erected the first house within the present limits of Plymouth; and at the end of three years, his son sold his farm in St. Joseph County, and moved, with his wife, to Marshall County, where he passed the remainder of his life. He purchased a tract of wild land in Center Township, while the Indians still haunted the surrounding forests, and wild animals filled the night air with their cries. He spent the best years of his life clearing and improving his land, and by honest toil accumulated a competence in worldly goods, providing each of his children with a farm, as they grew to maturity. As other settlers joined him, and public improvements were made in the county, he manifested the true spirit of the pioneer, by joining hands with his neighbors and helping along every measure of progress. He was a friend of religion and education, and every enterprise that had for its object the public good received his encouragement and support. In all his dealings with the world, he maintained an unsullied reputation for honesty and purity of purpose, and was universally honored by those who knew him. In politics, he first acted with the Whig party, and upon the organization of the Republican party, embraced its principles, and was ever afterward one of its most cordial supporters. He was a member of the Odd Fellows' Lodge of Plymouth, and having taken the various degrees of that order, was ever afterward one of its most faithful and attentative members, He died April 14, 1859, lamented by a large circle of friends. His wife still survives, and resides at the old homestead with her daughter and son-in-law, MILES VAN VACTOR. She, too, bore her part bravely in the struggles of pioneeer life, and lives to witness the important changes wrought in less than half a century, and to enjoy the friendship and esteem to which her merits so well entitle her.

During the summertime, when I was a young girl, my sisters and I would take turns going to Aunt Ellen's and Uncle Mike's house for a week or two in Shelby, Ohio. We had a great time. Aunt Ellen was a fabulous cook. She would bake her biscuits and bread daily and occassionally donuts! Uncle Mike would take us fishing. Shelby was a small place and we could walk anywhere we needed to go. We would walk downtown or go swimming in the city pool daily. Good memories.

Obituary for Anna Rose Nesbitt (nee Smith)
Anna Rose Nesbitt, 82, beloved wife of Fred Jr. (deceased) died Tuesday morning, August 12, 2003, at her daughter and son-in-law's home in San Jose, California.
Anna was born September 19, 1920, in Vincennes Indiana, the tenth child of Gertrude (Farrell) and Charles Smith.
Anna moved to Akron with her family at age 12. One afternoon in 1937, Anna met Fred Nesbitt Jr. at Summit Beach Park. They spent the summer canoeing, dancing, and falling in love. Anna graduated from St. Mary High School in 1938 and in that same year married Fred at St. Mary Catholic Church. Anna and Fred enjoyed more than 60 years of married life in Akron, where they raised five daughters. As an avid reader, Anna often exchanged numerous books with her daughters and her grandchildren-mysteries were her favorite. At age 73, Anna received her first computer, began surfing the net, and e-mailing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved hearing "You've got mail!" Anna was also a news junkie, often watching FOX News. She recognized most political faces and had strong feelings about all of them.
Anna was preceeded in death by her husband, Fred Nesbitt Jr., on May 10, 1999; son-in-law, George Gilson on September 15, 2001; sister-in-law, Lucille Nesbitt; and nine brothers and sisters: the Smiths: Charles, Ellen Sawochke, Robert, Hugh, Raymond, John, Paul, Catherine Talcott and Gertrude Flowers.
Anna is survived by her five daughters and four sons-in-law, Anne (Donald) Pauken of San Jose, California, Sandra (Donald) Rizzo of Hickory, N.C., Nancy (Daniel) Gulling of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Rita Gilson of Akron, Linda (Richard) Rodgers of Akron. She is also survived by 29 grandchildren: the Pauken grandchildren: Denise Martin, David, Brenda Torrisi, Deborah Turqueza, Brian, and Diane Harberson, the Rizzo grandchildren: Christopher, Michael, Donald, Jeffrey and Jennifer Hatfield, the Gulling grandchildren: Kirstin, Scott and Dana, the Gilson grandchild: Elizabeth Sorace and the Rodgers grandchildren: Rilinda, Christen, Jason and Kenneth. Also surviving are 23 great grandchildren, sister, Rita (Robert) France of Bucyrus, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, James (Betty) Nesbitt and Eugene Nesbitt; special niece, Jackie Bittner, all of Akron; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m at the Dunn-Quigley Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 822 Grant St. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Anna's name to her lifelong parish, St. Mary Catholic Church, 750 S. Main St., Akron 44311.

Dear Sandra:
We read your mother's obituary, and we can now see why you are such a character! Our deepest sympathy to you and yours. We will hold down the fort until your return. God's protection as you return home. Isn't it wonderful that your mom is now in heaven surfing the clouds instead of the net and with God? Now she is without pain. Take care. We love you.
