Letter from R.K. Routley of 5 Kingthorpe Road, London NW10 8JE. dated 14.1.98;

Dear Con & Judith Reed nee Routley (of "Langwith" 127 Wallis St. Woollahra 2025)
Thankyou for very informative letter plus family trees received 6th Jan.
There appears to be some uncertainty regarding Boon data and whilst not wishing to add to confusion I feel it may help if I offer my understanding of Tiverton family although I should stress that I have not seen original Boon tree or direct copy.
After a long search failed to uncover parentage of my West Somerset born (circ. 1811) grt grandpa Henry, I posted 80 enquiry letters to random selection of UK telephone book addresses offering to help Somerset rooted families in particular and others if possible with aid of my mainly census and registration records. I regret to say that response was not very uplifting but it was a source of much satisfaction to assist most who troubled to respond and three of them were Tiverton rooted namely;-
1. Walter Frank b. 1908 2. Harold Charles b 1924 3. John Stanley b1927 (see enclosed tree). They were unknown to each other and had only awareness of Cordwainer grandfather John of Tiverton who moved to London but by acting as the middleman I was instrumental in linking up their individual known trees and subsequently Harold Charles obtained a feint copy of Boon version and constructed the enclosed tree no.1. Having later obtained computer printout of Morman records I amended earlier generations back to Richard as per enclosed no. 2.
The 1841 census for Tiverton gives both father William and son John as Bootmaker. I believe that Johns brother Edwin was the first jeweller in family having moved to Bath, then Johns' son Edwin George followed suit in Croydon.
1. Walter Frank hopefully still alive aged nearly 90, wrote several interesting letters in response to my offerings and mentioned that his father was a buyer for the renowned London Jewellers Mappin & Webb. Charles Frederick (b 1863) grandfather of 2. Harold Charles was a Director in firm of stationers Thomas & Sons of Ludgate Hill London. As enclosed tree shows two of Johns' grandsons died in first W. War and one of them I believe namely Ernest George won the Military Cross.
In terms of output, I suppose the beginning of 19th cent. was the golden age for the wide range of perfected hand skills all requiring the serving of a long and hard apprenticeship. Doubtless you are correct re origins of Cordwainer although it should be said that by William & Johns time to judge from census returns,the description Cordwainer applied to most boot and shoemakers in days before mass production took over. Your mention of currier craft interested me since I had not heard of this before, which explains why given infuriatingly feint film of 1851 census I had taken Frederick aged 21 to be servant carrier to a John Pratt in Bampton St. whereas entry read serv. currier ie apprentice currier.
Experience tells me never to be cock sure in this business but I fancy odds are stacked against Hugh Routley's John being from the same family. Unfortunately my registration records dont start until 1838 and I presume marriage to Sarah Loader was earlier. The first John marr. I have at St. Thomas (Exeter region) Devon is in 1841. Ques. Are you sure of the St. Saviour ref. because if this is regn. district it was in South London?
Turning now to family of your George and Mary Rowe, having pondered awhile on the usual meagre earlier data I feel inclined to agree with your concluded descent from George and Mary Purchase as presented in your letter of 14th Oct. 97 to Robin of which I have a copy. As with Somerset pre. 1840, the records are far from complete but perhaps my data on following sheets will provide a few crumbs of information-every little helps.
Since the 1851 surname index purports to list all Routleys etc. in census for Counties of Devon and Somerset etc, if an earlier known family is missing and no later regns. are found on my records I presume they emigrated.
A case in point is Tiverton couple William and Mary (Kent) with three children Harriet (b1829) William Kent (b1831) and Samuel (b1834). I conclude that this was son of William and Eliza Quick who is shown on tree went to USA. It would seem that they departed circ. 1835 to 40. and I expect that Murray & Megan have further data on this family.

Burial recorded in Register of Burials in the ground of Tiverton June 1855 to December 1875. Entry states William Routley, Labourer, 89 yeras Tiverton,buried 20/2/1863 ceremony by Edward WEll baptist minister square F no VII-9.
