Notes for Joan Antrobus:|
Joan emigrated from England aboard the "Planter", Nicholas Trerice, Master, sailed from London 2 April 1635 arrived at Boston on Sunday 7 June 1635. Passenger list: Mrs. Joan Tuttle aged 42, certified from St. Albans, Hertsfordshire, also children of first marriage John, Mary and William, and mother Mrs. Joan Antrobus, aged 65.
JOAN ANTROBUS, baptised 25-Jun-1592 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England; daughter of Walter ANTROBUS born ____ & Joan ARNOLD born c1570; died after 29-Jan-1660/61 in Ipswich, MA.
Joan and her 2nd husband, John Tuttell, left England on the small barque Planter on 11-Apr-1635 and arrived at Boston, MA, on Sunday 7-Jun-1635. They brought their family to America together with an extended family group of Tuttells, Joan's mother Joan (Arnold) Antrobus, and Joan's three Lawrence children. They settled initially at Ipswich, Mass. She was at the time 42 years old and her husband was 39 years old. John Tuttell returned to the British Isles about 1651 with his youngest daughter, Hannah, and died at Carrickfergus, Ireland, 30-Dec-1656.
Antrobus is a hamlet within the lordship of Over Whitley and lies between Stretton and Great Budworth. All those who are named Antrobus take their name from this Cheshire hamlet, which appeared in the Domesday Survey as "Entrebus". The two components of the name "Entre-bus" are derived from the Latin "inter" and the Old French "bus" or "busc" from which comes "bois", meaning "a wood". The name therefore means "Amid the woods".
Joan was 3rd of 5 children. Joan eventually followed her second husband, John Tuttle, to Carrickfergus, Ireland - he went there in 1650/51 and she in 1654 - he died 30 Dec 1656; she was alive in 1659. John was a mercer at St. Albans; they m. ca. 1626-28; he was b. ca. 1596; they had four children (see "Tuttle Genealogy", by G. F. Tuttle (1883). Joan and John and her Lawrence and Tuttle children came to New England on the "Planter", landing in June, 1635; her mother, Joan, probably lived with the Tuttles at Ipswich, MA. and died there.
