Descendants of William Barnes

Generation No. 3

3. JOHN3 BARNES (JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1829 in Nottingham, England, and died July 16, 1913 in Drummoyne, Australia. He married ELIZABETH J ?.

Notes for J
OHN BARNES:
Grandfather Barnes came out from Devonshire, England about 1840. He was a civil engineer and worked for years in the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper office in charge of the printing machinery. He was about 70 years old on retirement and died at age 85.

Grandfather Barnes lived with his maiden daughters Lizzie and Jenny at the house Clifton in Drummoyne (Sydney). He owned 60 brick homes in Ashfield and several houses in Drummoyne. His will left all to Jennie and Lizzie and when they passed away, most of the money went to the Kerr boys Ken and Jack. A tiny pittance was left to Uncle Charlie whe left me $1000 which I received in Rossland. Cecil has a similar amount, but I don't know whether Madge, Enid, or Helen received any. OCTOGENARIAN PRINTER.

A LINK WITH THE PAST.

Mr. John Barnes, one of the oldest engineering printers in the State, died at his residence, Beaucaire, Cambridge-road, Drummoyne, yesterday after a lengthy illness. His death removes one who was a link with the early days of printing in New South Wales.

Mr. Barnes was born in Nottingham, England, 84 years ago. Both his father and grandfather were engineers, who supplied much of the intricate machinery used in lace manufacture. He also was brought up to the engineering business, but with some friends came to Sydney 60 years ago. After engaging in business for a couple of years, he, in 1856, joined the staff of the “Sydney Morning Herald”, and until 1892 remained with the firm. In that year he retired, and had since resided at Drummoyne. Retiring in disposition, and of studious habits, he was little known beyond his own circle of friends, who however, fully appreciated his sterling qualities.

The deceased printer witnessed all the changes and improvements that have taken place in newspaper publishing during the last half century. When he first joined the “Herald” in 1856 the publishing offices were in George-street, and the machinery consisted of one two-feeder Cowper machine, one small single-feeder Napier, and a double demy Albion press, run by a 5-h.p. engine and boiler. Then at full pressure the two-cylinder machine could only turn out 2000 papers per hour, printed on one side only, or 1000 complete copies an hour. He saw the change from steam to gas engine and then to electricity, when the big Hoe presses could turn out over 70,000 eight-page papers an hour. For 36 years he superintended the installation and working of all the machinery in the “Herald” office.

The funeral will leave his late residence for the Field of Mars Cemetery at 2 o’clock this afternoon.
