Notes for L
OUISA MAUD SIM:
Louisa Maude, Mother, married Dad in Parkes N.S.W. She must have been 17 when she married. I remember her as a beautiful dark haired woman who, like father, was an artist. She had a beautiful nature and everyone liked her. But after father died in 1897 and with no money coming in, her health broke down and she was practically an invalid until her death in 1901 with seven brats to feed, wash and clothe. I remember that her coffin was carried away from our farm at the valley in an old dung cart drawn by a big plough horse to Ilford. Mother was born in Sussex Street, Sydney - where all the wharves are now. When Father became ill, Enid and I were put with friends in many suburbs of Sydney until Mother rented a house at Milson's Point on the North Shore near where the bridge approaches now are. Here Enid and I (aged 5) went to Kindergarten, then the family moved to Waittera (near Hornsby) and went to Miss Small's private school, then to Public School in Hornsby. In 1900 we moved to the Valley near Ilford and went to the Ilford school.

Enid and Helen left Australia in 1904 on June 18 to live with Aunt Mabel and Uncle Jack in West Hartlepool, England. Madge didn't go over for a couple of years. (written by Lawrence Barnes)

Place of death is likely to have been at the No. 1 Australian Auxiliary
Hospital at Harefield Park, Middlesex.
During the two world wars, the United Kingdom became an island fortress used for training troops and launching land, sea and air operations around the globe. There are more than 170,000 Commonwealth war graves in the United Kingdom, many being those of servicemen and women killed on active service, or who later succumbed to wounds. Others died in training accidents, or
because of sickness or disease. The graves, many of them privately owned and marked by private memorials, will be found in more than 12,000 cemeteries and churchyards. Harefield (St. Mary) Churchyard contains war graves from both world wars. There are 120 First World War graves, mostly those of Australians who died in No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield
Park. Uniquely, their graves are marked by scroll shaped headstones, chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. In the centre of the Australian plot stands a memorial obelisk which was erected by Sir Francis Newdegate, late Governor of Tasmania and of Western Australia, and Mr. C.A.M. Billyard-Leake, of Harefield Park. The churchyard also contains six graves of the Second World War.
