Notes for L
AURENCE SIM BARNES:
I got a job later on the ship "Manuka", then on the "Marana" - deserted at Vancouver. I went C.P.R. to Arrowhead, then Lake steamer to West Robson and train to Nelson where Enid and Helen were working for Mrs. Blaylock. Then to Harrop where Mabel and Jack lived. Stayed there for three weeks. Then went to work at C.M. & S. with the chain gang (Italians) on January 1, 1911. Left Trail on April 1 for Vancouver. After several weeks I worked at a steam laundry, then for a showcard writer, then for an architect. In 1913 I worked in Victoria for Spencer's store until I joined up with the 48 Canadian Battalion at Willows Camp, Victoria - cost me $85 to get gold bridging in my teeth before the army doctor would pass me.

Jul 7/99 Jean Colman wrote: Laurence Sim Barnes married Ida Rose Ellis (daughter of Ernestine & John Ellis) on June 2nd, 1918. (Uncle Jack Wilson was Ernestine's brother) in London somewhere. After the 1914-1918 war they returned to Canada. He had various jobs, including "Show Card Writing" and used to produce a small magazine at one time (Joan Hudson can probably tell you more of this). He worked for C.M.S. at Warfield, Trail, BC and they lived in Rossland for quite a few years.

On Jan 4, 1933 we all left Vancouver and travelled to Australia (Sydney) and then went by train to Mount Isa, a mining town in NW Queensland. We lived there till 1946, then Dad, Mum, Betty & I moved to Luanshya, N. Rhodesia (now Zambia). Mum & Dad left Luanshya in June 1961 to retire back in Australia. Mum passed away on the ship, 18 hours before docking in Fremantle where she is buried.
Dad came back to South Africa (we were living there by then) in 1966 & 1968, and he died at home with me on Feb 16, 1969. He was an interesting man and at Mt Isa, he & I used to go prospecting. He found a mineral - beryllium - and he & another man mined it & sent it off to Brisbane, where it was used in the hardening of steel, I think.
