Cold House to one meeting north of Shudehill. He continued to minister up to
the time of his death on November 5, 1765
At the time of his death he had been collaborating
with John Newton on a revised edition of the Bible. John Newton was the well

It is a beautiful church, going back hundreds of
years.
It is on the top of a hill and lit up a night with
uplighters so you can see the church for miles around.
It is built on a site called Warhill. During the
battles after William the Conqueror died, his nephews, wife etc were at war,
and this site was the scene of a famous battle.

Anderton. John Cherry was an over seer of the Canals in Clayton
Manchester. They accompanied the young Warhurst couple along with other
Cherry family members and made their home in Walkerville Sth Aust. The
house ‘Clayton’ still stands in 2007
(Soroka Photograph collection)
Elizabeth nee Cherry had family members for support as
they arrived together on the ‘Caucasian’. Her brother Edward had been settled
here for two years before his parents John and Catherine, brothers John and
Francis and the Warhursts decided to join him and make a new life in South
Australia.
Descendent Dr Ed Cherry published a beautifully bound
edition of the ‘Cherry Tree’ and had copies made for each of his grandchildren.
John Cherry senior was a fine woodcraftsman and left a legacy of lovely inlaid
pieces for his children, one piece which was the pride and joy of Mrs Warhurst,
was the portable writing desk that John had used to write his letters on as he
travelled on the ship to Australia

Born on the 20 Oct 1860 at
home in Adelaide, Abel was to follow in his musical father’s footsteps.
Listed as a musician on his wedding certificate to Kate Thorley, whom he
married 8 May 1892,in the historic St Mary’s Church, Sturt, Sth Australia.
In 1893 they lived in Gilbert St Adelaide, since demolished, and by 1905
Abel is listed as instrument maker at Torrens Rd Mitcham
The couple was to serve in the Mitcham parish of St Michael’s for many
years as they had set up home in Kyre Avenue Kingswood.
Pam Oborn’s book on the history of St Michael’s Mitcham pays tribute to
Abel and his family’s contribution to that parish where Abel served as organist
for 35 years
He drove a horse and trap and often
hurried off to Stirling to pay for another service.

According to Bill Evans, Abel was badly hit by the depression and lost
his business. He was a very kindly man who could turn his hand to any job – he
was a real handyman able to mend shoes, and could be seen working in his white
apron at the bench on the back verandah.
He was also known to remove teeth with pliers! He brewed his own beer
and stored it in the cellar. One loud exploding bottle often set off a chain
reaction.
After Abe died the family moved to the home of daughter Dorothy’s family
at 39 East Parade Mitcham.

Considered the
‘avante garde’ member of the family, she shared the music talent of her
ancestors and as she and Horace had no children they had an indulgent lifestyle,
which afforded the luxuries of travel and theatre.
A relative tells of
the sing-songs around the piano and how during the war the couple would
entertain servicemen who were on leave. The piano still wears the marks of the
beer glasses.
Eileen did all the
things many women frowned upon in that era – she smoked, loved painted

As a Bank officer in

25 Mar 1925:
“At an orchestra concert
at Strathalbyn last night in aid of the Strathalbyn High School, a farewell was
tendered Mr Gordon Warhurst (conductor) who has been promoted to the position
of accountant at the Unley Branch of the Commercial Bank.
Mr J W Elliott (Mayor)

Married Robert (Bob) George Stolz 30 May 1959 in St Columba’s Hawthorn
Sth Aust
Considered by many to be a
dedicated musician, lover of life and people, her contemporaries in the Canzona
Quartet were quick to praise and honour this lovely lady who started the group,
which was originally begun as a group of friends just getting together to play
music in their own homes. Word spread through the community, and the rest as
they say is history
Rose Marie one of the
members said that Jenny’s expertise and practicality was much admired, for as
far as music was concerned there was nothing she could not do.
She composed several pieces and was the arranger for the different
instruments
As the Canzona became
popular and they were invited to tour far and wide for engagements they
acquired and old van to transport them and their instruments to and fro. Life
‘on the road’ was not without plenty of fun, drama and excitement.
Once on a trip to Victor
Harbour for an engagement a string on Jenny’s virginal snapped because of the
extreme weather, somewhere in the high 30’s.
The show went on without a hitch as she had quickly repaired and retuned
the virginal. Only a true musician can appreciate what weather alone can do to
an instrument.

His obituary written by long time friend of Adelaide radio fame wrote of
him quotes:
“Dear Editor,
Ray Warhurst was well known throughout the Diocese as a fine musician,
organist and choirmaster.
His much loved father Cecil
Warhurst, preceded Ray as Organist-choirmaster, and Ray was initially in this
role at St Aidan’s Payneham South Australia for some seventeen years.
Warhurst Senior retired and Ray
became organist-choirmaster at St Theodore’s during the incumbency of Father
Rex Hartley in the year 1954.
Ray Warhurst inherited from his father a fine choir of about twenty
boys, and the quality of St Theodore’s won compliments throughout the Diocese –
and some of those typical ‘scallywags’ with the angelic voices’ are here today,
or discharging adult responsibilities in other parishes. He retired in 1976
Fortunately a splendid

Ray Warhurst was a warm, happy
man with many friends in church, musical, business and sporting spheres.
Older St Theodore’s members will remember the amusing after Church
football discussions between Ray Warhurst and a former rector the Venerable
Ernest Codd.
Ray has gone to his just reward; his music and his warm friendship will
always be part of this Parish and its history.
St Theodore’s will not forget Ray Warhurst, a good man, whose talents
were always at the command of the Lord he loved.

Peter Narroway –professional musician
Took over management of the troubled Symphony Orchestra after the demise
of the Elizabethan Symphony Orchestra
Peter was instrumental
(excuse the pun) in bringing music into the lives of children with his quirky
‘musicals’ for kids.
Long time friend Elizabeth Silsbury, music critic for the Adelaide
Advertiser pays tribute to Peter’s expertise as a musician and manager in her
obituary for him when he died suddenly of a heart attack

The Warhurst family with
their well-documented musical talent have been delighting South Australian
audiences with their artistic flair since their arrival in Australia.
Their talent lies in their genetic ancestry and many names are well
established in the entertainment industry at this present moment.

Walter
Walke Warhurst died in 1942 from an ear infection causing meningitis,
ironically just before his contemporary, Alexander Fleming, discovered
penicillin.
The
Brownhill Creek runs at the back of this property which is now a very pleasant
picnic spot.
Walter is buried in West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide with his parents and in 2007 the grave is falling into disrepair and the wording on the headstone is illegible. JS
Again, Greetings Jenny,
I don't think I have anything to add to your family history research going back
to Prussia.
My Great Grandfather came to Canada from Ivybridge,Devonshire, England in about
1881. From there I have researched an uninterupted line back to
1586. Same Parish - Same Country. Devonshire, England.
I must admit though the information you wrote about the WALKES being skilled
musicians - pianists and organists. Well .....
I grew up with a "natural voice" This was picked up on early and
I was streamed into music from an early age. First with piano
lessons and then enrollment in St. Michael's Cathedral Choir School.
After that attended Humber College for music - then obtained my B.A. in
Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Guelph.
My income has come from Landscaping and singing has been a lucrative hobby -
church services, weddings, funerals, anniversaries, the odd
bar....heheheh. I currently sing in the Tenore with the Kitchener
Waterloo Philharmonic Choir......As well I have been involved in a number of
musicals including OLIVER, FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM,
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and BRIGADOON
As to my brothers they all received the same piano instruction as I and
all play far better than me. I don't claim to play at all now other than
to roughly accompany my own practise.
My eldest brother sings, conducts a church choir, plays piano, guitar very well
(he's 53 now) squeeze box.
My twin brothers also have piano and play not too badly. The funny thing
is though, when they were in their early 20's they both developed an interest
in the Violin family. They both play now. But even more fantastic
is that Greagory builds Violins and Cello's. He studied in Wales and
German where he met and married his wife, Sybilla Rupert who is a Viola player
of her own right.
Bernard, the other twin, makes the bow's for the stringed instrument
family!!! YoYo Ma play's one of Sybillas Cellos and uses on of Bernards
Bow's. (Bernard specializes in Baroque Bow's)
So how does that grab you???? It's a shame we are not related.
In my research I found a Probate entry granted to the son, Thomas WALKE,
instrument maker in the late 1800's near London.
I also printed out an index of WALK/E's in the 1901 Census and notice there is
an Albert WALK age 27 in St. Pancras who is a "Pianoforte
Polisher".....
It was nice to hear from you again and thanks for that little tidbit about the
musicianship of the WALKE's
Cheers
James A Walke

Is
anyone researching the WARHURST family of Manchester.
James
was a carpenter and his wife Martha had at least 3 children Joseph, Ann and
Jesse in the 1790s.
We
are a local history venture and have only records of Burnage so you should know
of a Burnage connection.

Could
anyone look up in the above census returns the details of Jesse Warhurst, born
Burnage 1798. He was a Horseman in later census details. In 1841 he wife was
Ann, and by 1851 his second wife was Charlotte born in Halifax in 1814. I
believe he lived in Manchester for both census, the area possibly around Hart
Street or Bloom Street which I think is the City Centre.

innkeeper of the Gun Inn in the 1840's to 1850's. His son son born in 1844, and
later John w. operated the blacksmith shop on market street. My great
grandmother was Betty Warhust, a daughter of Joseph and Ann, born in 1828.
Betty married Wright Massey, born 1819, the son of Kezia Massey. Kezia later
married George Band. I'm also curious as to the location of "Dog

on any maps, current or historical. thank you.... Mark of Iowa, USA

And a short history of Stockport from the 1700’s ‘ The
Arkwrights’
By 1790 Oldknow built a steam mill in
Stockport and laid foundations for a larger mill at Mellor.
' The Life of Robert Owen'
Robert Owen writes in his account of
Samuel Oldknow's business dealings that although he had made great
profit two years in a row he was in
the 1790's determined to the greatest
muslin spinner and was now on a similar road with his ambitions as a cotton
spinner in the coming years.
A seemingly irrational ambition
resulting in over capitalising saw Oldknow face some pretty tough times in the
trying period from 1792. (It would seem that the ambition was certainly not
about money - it was more about pride in what he could produce)
Owen writes of others in the this
period: Arkwright built a cotton mill in Manchester and Mr Drinkwater a rich
Manchester manufacturer and foreign merchant had built a mill for finer
spinning and had it filled with all sorts of machinery under the watchful of a
wellknown scientific adviser of the day by the name of George Lees. Apparently
Drinkwater knew nothing about cotton but was a good fustian producer and
merchant but was totally unaware that he was about to lose Lees who formed a
partnership with a Sir George Philips in Salford. It was Robert Owen who
applied to fill the position left by Lees.
In May 1792 Samuel Oldknow continued to buy up land
and in doing so he
acquired several fields and a farmhouse, 'Drake
Carr', from John Fearnley
South Yorkshire is crossed by the River Don,
roughly speaking from east to west. Several major iron- and steel-producing
centres are located on the banks of the river Historically, coal mining has
been an important activity in much of the county, and agriculture, notably
dairy farming, continues in the east. The city of Sheffield lies on the eastern
edge of the Peak District National Park
Originally from Strines, James ran the Spring
Gardens from 1825 -1837 (James Probate)
The earliest record found for Spring Gardens was in
1825 when a plot of land was leased for 99 years to James Warhurst by the Duke
of Norfolk.( Web)
In 1825 James Warhurst became the first
landlord of the Spring Gardens in Compstall. He was probably responsible for
building the pub itself and he also leased a large plot of land behind it that
he laid out as Pleasure Gardens. In 1837 the licence passed to his son, Caleb,
who was to remain as landlord for 36 years. Caleb leased further land and
during his tenancy turned the Pleasure Gardens into a major tourist attraction
that frequently received several thousand visitors on Bank Holidays.
Thank you boys for letting me quote your
article on the Spring Gardens
|
|
“The Pleasure Gardens featured a 'gooseberry avenue', originally
planted by James, which became most famous. Other attractions included an
aquarium, a monkey house, a dance floor and cages with foxes, alligators, a
magnificent giant Derbyshire ox and a large variety of domestic and foreign wild
fowl. Firework displays were often held and the many other forms of
entertainment included brass bands, comedians, prize fighting, rifle shooting
and even a tightrope walker. Within the grounds was a building called the
Foresters Hall that was often used for local flower or fruit and vegetable
shows.
Unfortunately, in 1881 and 1888, landslips during severe storms
resulted in large sections of the gardens being lost forever. This, and the
coming of the First World War, saw the end of the Pleasure Gardens at
Compstall. Today, there is so little trace of it left that it's hard to image
the magnitude of this once great attraction.
Caleb was landord of Spring Gardens Compstall for
37 years (1837- 1872) and in the Marple website it is Caleb who is credited
with putting Compstall and the Spring Gardens on the map. In 1836 another block
was leased from the Duke of Norfolk."

Caleb died in April 1872 and his wife Jane took
over the pub.
Caleb WARHURST who
was born in 1809 had three marriages.
His children with Nancy WILLIAMSON are Charles,
Sarah and Elizabeth.
Children with Nancy's sister Susannah WILLIAMSON

on the past family tree.
When
I was young, my father Frederick, showed me a picture of either his granddad
& grandmother or great grand parents, which would take it back to early/
mid 1800's. The man was tall and big and dressed in a uniform with a helmut
with a spike on the top, which would be in keeping with the German/Prussian
uniform of the day. My dad did say that he was told that this great/grand
parent was German.
Sadly
when my father died I found that he had destroyed a lot of old family photos
and this picture has never come to light.
Many
years ago I worked in Germany for a short while and a man at the company I
worked for had an interest in names. He thought that the Warhurst name was of
German/Prussian origin and before being Anglicised the name came about from War
Lords e.g. a war lord would be similar to the medieval knights.
Hope
the above is of interest and I will keep you informed if a come across
anything.
Regards,
David

While looking for twins - common to the Williams family Jenny Sandercock discovered
the birth of twins Mary and Sarah Williams on the Digger Index CD parents recorded as John Williams and Mary Kinsey TMu! TMu was the early district registration for the Burra copper mining area.
She died under the name of Sarah Williams in 1869 in the Adelaide hospital after being admitted several weeks before with diptheria (Ade H Records) but her death certificate states that she died of gyniekologies maligna (viewed s the SAGHS Unley South Australia) _ I wonder if it was the same type of cancer as her sister Mary? Or, has this record been mistranscribed?
Baby Mary died one day after her birth in 1853 - my next challenge is to find Sarah Williams her twin. JS
Was Sarah using her sister's name or has the person recording the information not transcribed properly?

Herbert William “Bill” Warhurst, staff photographer of The Times 1921-1953, studies a map in front of his jeep somewhere in Normandy. The photograph was probably taken in July or August 1944. Among his many assignments were photographing the excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 and Chamberlain and Hitler at Godesberg in 1938. He was at the British Second Army Headquarters at Luneburg on 24 May 1945 and photographed the body of Himmler shortly after he committed suicide |

Many thanks for this Jenny
It does seem quite likely that Samuel would be much the same age as the bride
and groom (eg 25 +/- 5)
In the 1841 Census I have 24 Samuel ADSHEADs
but only three born in the range 1798 - 1808
All three are born in 1806 (Cheadle CHS, Wilmslow CHS, Wigan LAN)
You do not say where this marriage took place
But it may well be a clue to the Elizabeth ADSHEAD in your original WARHURST
family of 1891
I can give you more information on Samuels if you are interested.
