Includes NotesNotes for Jose Rafael Romero:
Ernie writes; Grandpa Rafael Romero had a brother named James. When Rafael was a small boy, he was taken captive by the Indians and raised as their own until he was 15 years old when he escaped. He wandered about for many years until he came in contact with a man who recognized him and asked his name, whereupon this man found Rafael to be his long lost brother. This man was Santiago Romero (James). Rafael was about 31 years old at the time. James told Rafael that it was about time that he married and settled down. Rafael said that he would be only too happy to do so, that if he could marry a young 15 year old girl who had served him a meal while on a stop at a home in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, a few days back. They went and found the father and James asked for the hand of this young 15 year old girl, who was Carmelita Archuleta. They were married and James gave Rafael a start with some sheep and some land, in what was once, Pasamonte, New Mexico. I went there once in 1955 with my little brother Larry and my Uncle Charlie, who was my Grandma Carmelita's brother.I got to see first hand, the area where my dear Mother and Aunt Ida tended the sheep of my Granpa Rafael, and ran barefoot among the black malpie rock, and up and down the rolling hills.
Grandpa Rafael was jailed once for nonpayment of a debt and James payed to get him out and upon being released from jail, Grandpa decided to leave Pasamonte, which is what the family did. They came west to Dulce, New Mexico, where Uncle Ezekiel Archuleta was already living. My father came along as he was courting my mother, who at the time was a 14 year old girl. The family had come with seven wagons loaded with all the needed provisions to start a new life. Great Grandpa Damian Archuleta was also along. While in Dulce, some Indians supposedly robbed them one night, so they left and continued west til they came to Allison, Colorado where they settled. Great Grandpa Damian loaned Grandma Carmelita some money to buy a house which was in Allison. I last saw that house in 1962, it had been restored and it looked pretty good.
There are so many stories about my childhood surroundings; where we lived and over by Grandma's before we moved to Durango. I always loved my Grandma Carmelita with such a tender fondness, for she was to me such an extraordinary person. I must say, I really admired her.
