Descendants of William Chenoweth

Generation No. 3

5. JOHN3 CHENOWETH (JOHN CHENOWETH2 SR., WILLIAM1 CHENOWETH) was born 1706 in near Joppa, Baltimore Co., MD, and died 1770-1771 in Frederick Co., VA. He married MARY SMITH November 26, 1730 in St. George's Psh, Baltimore Co., MD, daughter of James Smith and Hannah Wilmot.

Notes
He made a will in Frederick Co., VA on Nov. 3, 1770, which was probated March
5, 1771. In it he mentioned his wife, Mary, eldest sons, William and John (who
received land in Hampshire Co. on the Capacon), son Absolm, Thomas nd Richard
(who received land on which John lived), and son Abraham ( However, "Genealogy
of Virginia Families" asserts that Abraham may have been an error and referred
to Absolm, since Abraham was never herd from again), Arthur; daughters
Elizabeth, Mary and Rachel; son-in-law James Stuart; grandchildren Mary
Chenoweth (daughter of William). Grand-daughters legacy was conditioned upon
her staying with grand-ma until she became of age. Son Richard to receive
John's smith tools. "Genealogy of Virginia Families", Vol. 1, page 348
concludes "This John of 1771 is undoubtedly the son of John of 1746". His
widow and 3 sons sold land "on the drains of Mill Creek and branch of Opecon
which was granted by patent to John on Oct. 6, 1764".

According to "History of the Chenoweth Family", by Cora Chenoweth Hiatt, 1925,
page 40, John and Mary had nine children. He was a farmer and lived at
Chenoweth Manor, on GunpowderRiver, near Joppa, Baltimore Co., MD. At the
time, Joppa qas the county seat and it remained until 1768 when it was moved to
Baltimore Town. Thereafter, Joppa declined and all that remained in 1925 was
the Joppa Roads, houses and wharves were gone. He moved to Frederick Co., VA
about 1762.

John Chenoweth (sic) made will in Frederick Co., VA on Nov. 3, 1770, probated
March 5, 1771. Witnesses were John Salsbery, William Salsbery and M. Morgan.
He mentiones wife, Mary, who is appointed executrix, eldest sons, William and
John, who receive land in Hampshire Co. on the Cacapon; sons, Absolom, Thomas
and Richard, who receive land on which the testator lives; son Abraham
(probably an error for Absolom, as he is not heard of again); son Arthur;
daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Rachel; son-in-law James Stuart; granddaughter
Mary Chenoweth, daughter of eldest son, William, whose legacy is conditioned on
her remaining with her grandmother until she becomes of age. Son, Richard, is
to receive testator's smith's tools.
