Notes
A good description of this man and his exploits is in "James Chenoweth, the
Story of One of the Earliest Boys of Louisville", by Alfred Pirtle in 1850. I
have a photocopy of the book in my files. There is not enough room here to
list it all.

He was a Revolutionary War Veteran. His sons were killed in the Chenoweth
Massacre July 17, 1789. They were living in Berkeley Co., VA and emigrated to
KY in Col. George Rogers CClark's group.

They built a boat to take them to area where Louisville, KY would later be
in 1778. Informationfrom "Two Centries of Elizabethtown and Hardin Co.,
KY, 1776-1976", page 147.

He built Fort Nelson. Inabout 1783, he moved his family to a farm near present
Middletown. They were attacked by Indians July 17, 1789. Three Chenoweth
children and two soldiers were killed in the attack. Mrs. Chenoweth was
scalped and left for dead, but survived by crawling into the spring house, to
live to a ripe old age with a bald head, covering her head with a dainty cap.

He, and family, is mentioned in "Two Hundred Years at the Falls of the Ohio",
by George H. Yates, 1987, a book about Louisville, KY. They were among first
residents on Corn Island in the Ohio River, brought there by George Rogers
Clark. He was one of the seven first Trustees of Louisville, KY. chosen at a
meeting April 17, 1779. The others were William Harrod, James Patten, Marsham
Brashears, Edward Bulgar, Henry French and Simon Moore. Edict of the trustees
in acquiring lot in the new Louisville was: "Thay every such person be
obligated to clear off the undergrowth and begin to cultivate part thereof by
the 10th of June, and build thereon a good covered house, 16 feet by 20, by the
25th of December. That no person sell his lot unless to some person without
one, but that it be given up to the Trustees to dispose of to some new
adventurer on pain of forfeture thereof." There was a drawing for lots on
April 24, 1779. Most of the early cabins were built in the vacinity of the
12th Street fort.

A local settler was Abraham Lincoln (grand father of President Lincoln), who
was killed by an Indian bullet on Long Run Creek (near Long Run Baptist Church)
in May 1786, as he and three sons were returning from planting. Tom Lincoln,
only ten, watched his father die.
