About Our Family Research

(22 July 2003). Well, haven't done much in the genealogy department due to layoffs at United Airlines (including me!). However, some folks have sent me some updates and given me permission to include the files on this web site.

Susan Ford received several wills from the Harford Co. Register of Wills, which she scanned and also transcribed. They are from 1797 and 1798, for Henry Scarff, Jr, and Henry Scarf respectively. They name the same people, so there is a possibility the wills are for the same person, but we're not sure. Susan may be reached at her public email at:

ford57@email.com

Also, Charles Askew has several letters in his possession from Mary Ann Regester Scharf to her daugher Hannah. I've included the transcripts of those letters, as the originals are quite hard to read--they're written crossways (to save paper, presumably). If anyone would like to see the scans of the original letters, please email me: mscharf@compuserve.com

All the new entries have the dates (22 July 2003) in front to ease search, since I can't control the order of the file listings!

Thanks for using this site for your research, and contributing what you can!

Mark Scharf

(24 Nov 2001). Cynthia Shockley took some time to do some "on-site" research in Baltimore, MD. She compiled from her research several listings of documents, including Scharf/Scarf/Scarff marriages, estate and wills, and some church records. Some of the source documents for these lists I've scanned from photocopies I made, and are in the "photographs" section of this web page. Cynthia's lists are VERY useful and bring together a number of different documents. Thanks very much Cynthia!!!

(23 Nov 2001). More information from books by Henry C. Peden. Including Maryland Marriage records, land records, St. George and Johns Precinct info, Harford County Scarf info (may or may not be related--might be the line from England), and two Biographies of Scarff in the Harford County. All these items are labeled with dates on the ** PHOTOGRAPH ** side. This is because the documents are scanned format (JPEG) just like a photograph. Most of this is data--not assimilated and tied to my "Scharf" line. But important to help isolate the distinct "Scharf/Scarff/Scarf" lines in the Baltimore area before 1800.

(14 Nov 2001). I've included more wills of some of the Baltimore County "Scharf/Scarf/Scarff" folks. Also, Col. John Thomas Scharf's application for the Sons of the American revolution. I have not tied the pieces together of the distinct Scharf lines in Baltimore, but thought the raw data might prove useful!

Original Post:

This information is primarily a compilation of research conducted by different members of my family over the years. It includes photographs and family tree information, some of which is substantiated with documents, some not.

Almost all of the Scharf research is based on a "blue print" type document my Grandfather, George C. "Clif" Scharf produced in the 1930s. He was a civil engineer, and the blue print represented an easy way to display and distribute his pedigree as he knew it. He sent numerous copies to family members at that time. I don't know the source of his information. I have no notes or research material he used, except several letters of thanks for copies of the blue print. One letter indicated he collaborated with his father, George Washington Scharf, to gather much of the family history.

I have verified only the facts stated on this blueprint relating directly to my direct ancestry to William Scharf, of Baltimore. I have not been able to verify the birthdate or location of William Scharf. Other names on the blueprint include Taylor, Price, Regester, Michael and Tipton, all in the Baltimore area.

The Gneckow research was conducted by several people, most recently my mother, Linda Eileen Gneckow Scharf, in the 1970s.

This is a transcription of the counter bond filed by the other executors of the estate of William Scharf to Isaac Taylor Scharf. Basically, once Isaac Taylor Scharf found out the will only gave him $1.00, he did not want to be indebted to the county $20,000 over the execution of the will! (My theory only--don't really understand the reason for $1.00 in the will).
