Notes for Simeon (Simon) Howey:
Probably born in Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe County, PA where he was enumerated living with his father, his wife Jane, and two children, William and James. 

 Moved to Plainsville in Luzerne Township where he was enumerated with his wife, Jane, and seven children in 1870.  In 1870 he was a Farm Hand and his oldest son was a  Bricklayer in the mines.

Receipt for Preparation of grave for Simon Howey said he was 89 years old.  Funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on October 16, 1901.  Permit fee issued October 15, 1901, No. 11294, was for Lot No. 832 cost $4.50 which was paid by James Howey.

Probably served in Company F of the Independent Cavalry Battalion of the Pennsylvania Militia of 1863.  Mustered in July, 1863 - Discharged December, 1863.

From History of Luzerne County, PA

James Howey, farmer, P.O. Plainsville, was born in Monroe County, PA, July 22, 1853 and is of Dutch origin.  His father's family consisted of eight children, of whom James is the second.  Our subject was reared on a farm, educated in the common school, and at the age of ten years began working around the mines.  For twenty years he did all the various kinds of work about the mines, and in 1883 he commenced agricultural pursuits on the "Enterprise farm", where he remained five years; then served one year as supervisor of Plains township; and in 1891 he located on the "Pittston and Elmira farm", belonging to the Delaware & Hudson Coal Company.  Mr. Howey was married, January 1, 1874, to Miss Parmelia, daughter of Samuel and Louise (Huey) Gregory, natives of Pennsylvania and of early Dutch origin.  Mr. and Mrs. Howey have two children, Minnie M. and Lizzie L.  Our subject is a member of the P.O.S. of A. and in politics is a Republican.  The family came to Luzerne county in 1855, and lived in a log house where Suburban Park now is, at a time when what is now the town of Parsons and vicinity was all a dense forest.  The father, Mr. Simon Howey, is still living, and for eight years has been an inmate of the Danville Insane Asylum.

Notes for Anna Mae Howey:
According to 1910 Census for Washington Twp, Northampton Co., PA, Anna Mae had remarried and divorced.  Unsure whether she had been married for 4 years or divorced for 4 years.  She was working as a "Washerwoman".  She lists her birthplace as Pennsylvania, and she can read and write.  Living with her are her daughter, Helen Whaley, aged 15, and her son, Augustus Whaley, aged 7.  

According to the 1920 Census for Allentown, Lehigh Co, PA, Anna Mae had remarried a third time to William P. Herring.  They were living at 1727 Tilghman Street and Ralph S. (Grube) Whaley, who was then 8 years old, was living with them.  William P. Herring was self employed as a carpenter.  Gus Whaley, aged 17, was apparently no longer living with his mother.

According to the 1870 Census for Plains Township, Luzerne Co., Annie was 8 years old at the time of the Census in August.  That would make her birth year 1862 not 1868.

He was born July 21, 1891 in Pen Argyl, Northampton, PA34,35, and died June 22, 1957 in St. Luke's, Fountain Hill, Lehigh Co., PA36.

Notes for Helen (Mandy) Amanda Whaley:
At time of marriage to Milton she lived in Mt. Bethel, Mt. Bethel Twn, Northampton Co., PA.

In 1939 or 1940 she and Milton separated.  Helen worked for Hess Brothers when she applied for Social Security Number on December 16, 1942.  Later Helen (Mandy) went to the Moravian single women's home where she worked as a domestic and lived for approximately 40 years. Notes for Milton Harrison Grube:
1900 Federal Census lists Milton's birthdate as 1891 and his age as 8.  Other documents, including an application for Social Security card, indicate his birthdate was 1895.  However, according to his daughter, he was born in 1891.  For purposes of this document, we will assume that he was born in 1891.

In 1911 Milton lived in Richmond, Washington Twn., Northampton County, Pa according to their marriage certificate.

Milton & Helen lived at 177 S. Walnut St., Bath Borough, Northampton Co during the 1920 Census.  Ralph Whaley did not live with them. Ralph was living with his Whaley grandmother (Anna Mae Howey Whaley  Herring) and they lived on Tilghman Street in Allentown.  The family also lived in Farmington during the 1920's.

Milton & Helen lived at 434 Heckewalder, Bethlehem while he was a sexton at the Bethlehem Moravian Church in the 1930's.  Milton moved into Althea & Bill Grube's apartment around 1939 or 1940 and Helen went to live  in the Moravian Church's single women's home.  According to her obituary, they had 11 grandchildren and 22 grandchildren when Helen died in 1975.

Milton Harrison Grube's Application for Social Security Number dated 4-14-1941 lists his father as Herman Harrison Grube and his mother as Leonora Andrew.  Copy of Application in Bonnie Serben's possession.

Milton lived with a John H. Grube in Bethlem in 1953 while he was working as a janitor at Lone Star Cement.   John H. Grube was probably a brother of Milton & William Grupe who lived at the same address in early 1900's.  According to Milton's daughter, May, this part of the family occasionally spelled their name with a "P" instead of a "B".

According to Althea Krex Grube Haws, Milton was a gambler.  He liked the "ladies" and was very charming.  Before he worked as a sexton, he worked for the railroad.  He gambled away at least one house which put quite a strain on his marriage.

Milton is buried in Memorial Park, Bethlehem but there is no marker on his grave.

Augustus6 Whaley (Anna Mae5 Howey, Simeon (Simon)4, William3, Boudewyn2 Houwy, John1)39 was born Abt. 1903 in Wilmington, Delaware, and died February 17, 1960 in Lidcombe, Fairfield, NSW, Australia.  He married Simla Violet Harley 1921 in Shanghai, China.  She was born in Simla, India, and died in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Notes for Augustus Whaley:
Gus was either a "foundling" or he was the son of one of Anna Mae's liasons.  He could not be the won of William Whaley since he was born several years after his death.

Gus was discharged from the American Navy around 1919 in Shanghai, China.  He worked for the Shanghai Municipal Waterworks as an engineer.  During World War II, Gus and Simla were interred by the Japanese.

After World War II, they returned to the US and spent time in Illinois.  Eventually, they settled in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Notes for Ralph Sulliver (Grube) Whaley:
Records in Northampton Courthouse which were personally inspected by Bonnie Serben in the fall of 1996, show that Ralph's mother was Helen Amanda and his father was Milton Grube, in spite of the fact that Ralph was born a few months prior to their marriage.

Ralph was in the Army in the 1930's and served in Hawaii.  He may have been a photographer for the Army, or it was a hobby, because he left a lot of photos of famous people taken in the 1930's in Hawaii.

He was a Marine in World War II.  Some family history said he was injured late in the war, however other family members disagree.  He served in the South Pacific and was part of the invasion of Guadalcanal.   He spent time in San Bernadino California and in Disney Oklahoma.  He cut all ties with the Grube family after the end of World War II and refused to talk to or see any family members.

His sister May said his middle name was spelled "Savilla" and that his nickname was "Chick".  Family photos show that he was a very handsome man.

Notes for Ethel Mae Grube:
Ethel was married to Robert Taylor who was a brother to George Taylor who married Mae.  The Taylor family owned the Hellertown Hotel at that time.   According to Milton's obituary in 1957, she was living in Baltimore, MD.

Notes for Mildred Grube:
Mildred & Howard Beers had one son and one daughter according to her sister, May Grube.  According to Althea Krex Grube Haws, the son died while a teenager in an automobile accident.  This was confirmed by May Grube.  There is no other information on the daughter at this time.

He married (1) Althea Lenora Krex February 1938 in Elkston, MD, daughter of William Krex and Emma Parry.  She was born October 31, 1918 in Slatedale, Pennsylvania.  He married (2) Dorothy A. DeLong Aft. 1948, daughter of John DeLong and Helen Mimlitch.  She was born 1917 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and died January 14, 1998 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Notes for William Harrison Grube:
William was confirmed in the Moravian Church in Bethlehem, PA - date unknown.  He did not graduate, but did attend Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania until 1934.  He lettered in football.

In early 1943 Bill & Althea were lived at 319 6th Ave., Bethlehem.  They lived just above Violet & Herman Roth.  Violet was Althea's maternal aunt.  Bill was a salesman according to the City Directory of 1943.  

Bill & Althea lived together with their two children at 2018 1/2 Washington St., Allentown, PA from approx 1943 to 1946.  They divorced in 1946.  Bill married Dorothy DeLong shortly after his divorce from Althea.

William worked for the Allen Laundry (Mary MacIntosh Company), first as a deliveryman and later worked his way up to a management.  Herman Roth also worked at the Allen Laundry.   After Bill retired from the laundry, he purchased and ran a tavern in Wescosville, PA.

When he was young, Bill was fond of bowling.  

He had a Siamese cat named "Buttons".

Notes for Walter Everest (Bill) Whaley:
Bill was in India at the beginning of World War II and joined the British Army there.  He fought the Japanese in Burma and Indo-China.  During a leave to England, he met Vi.  They married after World War Ii and returned to the USA with Gus and Simla and spent time in Illinois.

They settled in Taree, NSW, Australia where Vi's mother, sister, brother-in-law, and brother had earlier migrated from England.
