James J. Shannon, Sr., Former Legislator, Is Taken By Death James Jackson Shannon, 79, Richmond attorney and director emeritus of first Federal Savings and Loan Association of Richmond, and a former legislator, died at 9:30 p.m., Monday at his home on West Main Street after a long illness. Mr. Shannon was born at Greenfield, Tenn., and was the son of Jackson Lee Shannon and Mattie Ezzell Shannon. He was a graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy and attended school at Columbia University and Vanderbilt before his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from Cumberland University law School at Lebanon, Tenn. He had been a director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Richmond since 1930 and served as vice president. For a number of years he was secretary- treasurer of the Madison County Federal Land Bank Board. In 1948 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the Kentucky General Assembly. He had been honored as a 50 year Mason, Shriner, and SAE (this line covered up on article) of the Richmond Rotary Club. He was a charter member of the Eastern Star and filled all the chairs of the Masonic lodge. As an insurance representative he had regional offices in New York City, St Louis, Atlanta and Louisville before moving to Richmond. He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Virginia Hisle Shannon; a daughter, Mrs. Walter G. Ecton, Winchester; a son, James J. Shannon Jr., Richmond; a sister, Miss Mary Lee Shannon, Lebanon, Tenn. And three grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Homes by Rev. William T. Young, Dr. Frank N. Tinder, and Dr. T.L. McSwain. Shannon Sr., a native of Wilson and a resident of Richmond, Ky. will be held in Richmond, KY., pending final arrangements. Mr. Shannon died Monday December 13, 1976. He was the son of the late J.L. Shannon. Survivors include his widow, Virginia Hisle Shannon; a son, James J. Shannon Jr.; a daughter Mrs. Walter Ecton and a sister, Mary Shannon of Lebanon.
