Memphis Press-Scimitar, Wednesday, October 21, 1970 J.E. Shannon, Lumberman James E. Shannon Sr., one of the Mid-South's most well known lumbermen and President of Shannon Brothers Lumber Co. at 1684 Florida, Memphis died at 1:30 yesterday afernoon at Methodist Hospital after an apparent heart attack. He was 81. Mr. Shannon was born in Greenfield, Tenn., and moved to Memphis about 60 years ago. He began his lmber business with his brother, Tom Shannon who died in 1937. He was an avid bird hunter and owned property along the White River near Elaine, Ark. Mr. Shannon also owned J.E. Shannon Farms near Hughes, Ark. He served as an official of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for many years before transferring his membership to St. Luke's United Methodist Church. At St. Luke's he was on the board of stewards and served as a trustee. He was active in building fund programs of both churches. Mr. Shannon and his wife, Anna May Strube Shannon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last June. A Mason, he was also a member of Memphis Country Club and the Lumbermen's Club of Memphis. Mr. Shannonalso leaves two sons, James E. Shannon Jr. of the home address at 43 W. Galloway and Jack T. Shannon of 45 S. Norwall; a daughter, Mrs. William B. Uhlhorn of 311 S. Highland and five grandchildren.
