CONFEDERATE MONUMENTS - ATLANTA, GEORGIA

This is the burial site in the Oakland Cemetery in south Atlanta, Georgia on Memorial Highway, of George Washington Buchanan Shannon, CSA, who died in a hospital in Atlanta on September 22, 1863 after serving in the battles of Murfreeborough and Chickamauga. My grandfather, J. L. Shannon, went to Atlanta to bring the body back to Tennessee but he was buried in a mass unmarked burial site. Headstones mark the site but there is no headstone for GWB Shannon. Margaret Mitchell, the author of "Gone with the Wind" and Bob Jones, the golfer, are buried nearby.
