Obituary SHEFFILED.-—Cynthia E. Long was born on April 12, 1836 in Decater Co.,Ind. Was married to John Paul in 1851; he served sometime in the Union army during the Civil war, and was taken home to her in his coffin. Sometime after the end of the war she was married to John Singleton, who also served in the war and had received an honorable discharge. She began the study of medicine in 1880, first at Iowa City, afterwards at Cincinnatti, Ohio. She practiced medicine about twenty-five years mostly in Benton county,Iowa. About six years after the death of her second husband she was married to E. S. Sheffield on the 26th day of November 1896. She died February 17th, 1906, being 69 years, 10 months and 5 days old. She is survived by her husband one brother, many cousins, nephews, nieces whose bereavement can be more really felt than told. In her early life she became a conscientious and consistent member of the Christian church. In later years with a desire to find in the Bible definite authority for observing the first day of the week as the weekly rest day hence she gave the Bible critical investigation, but failing to find the evidence she became at once a conscientious observer of the seventh day and thus continued till her death faithful to the truth of God kind to every one. She will be missed by all, but she rests from her labor and her works do follow. Words of comfort were spoken in the Christian church to a large and attentive congregation by R E. Caviness assisted by Eld. Elliott, pastor of the Christian church. She was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery, Vinton, Iowa, to await the trump of God to wake to eternal life in the kingdom of God. R. E. Caviness. 0 cruel death, again we meet, And own I've met a sore defeat, As thou has broke a precious band By thy unyielding cruel hand. That band inclosed a loving wife, But thou hast taken now her life, Thus leaving me in grief to roam A pilgrim in this world alone. But I am hoping yet to see The time when death shall conquered be When Jesus Christ on earth shall reign, And give God's servants life again. 'Twill be the resurrection morn When saints from death to life are born, They thus will then as angels be All changed to immortality --Written and composed by E. S. Sheffield. |
