John Henry Simplot (son of John Claude Simplot and Francois Colard) was born July 07, 1808 in Besancon, France, and died September 09, 1883 in Dubuque, Iowa. He married (1) Annie (Nancy) Moffitt on April 16, 1835 in Nauvoo, Illinois, daughter of Thomas Moffitt. He married (2) Mary Moffat on April 23, 1839 in Dubuque, Iowa.

John C. and Annie moved to Iowa, arriving in Dubuque.
In 1839 John traveled to Harrisburg (now Harris) County, Texas, where on December 11, 1839 he received a head right certificate for 320 Acres. He did not stay to settle and patent the land, however, as he was back in Dubuque by the time of the 1840 census. Initially a grocer, he later carried on an extensive trade in the iron and heavy hardware business.
When John died he left considerable property to his children.
