The SINGLETONS, from IRELAND to CANADA

Updated August 25, 2007

About Our Family Research

Three Singleton brothers came from Ireland to Canada around 1817. We know that many settlers came to Ontario following the Napoleonic Wars and received grants of land and other aids from the government. We believe that the Singletons can be included in this group. The three brothers were William, born 1780, in Gorey Wexford, Thomas, born 1781, in Gorey Wexford, & Richard, born 1788, Balleycanew, Ireland. Their father was Lawrence Singleton, born abt 1755, but I have no further information about him.

William and Richard settled in the vicinity of Lyndhurst, Ontario while Thomas settled in Singleton's Corners which later became Crosby, Ontario.

William, Richard and Thomas were married before they left Ireland.

My family is descended from Thomas Singleton born July 1781 and his wife Sarah Butler born 1786 in Gorey Wexford, Ireland. The line continues through their son John Singleton, born April 16, 1815, in Balleycanew, Ireland and his second wife Sarah Donahue, born 1826, of Newboro, Ontario.

My family research is a work in progress and will be continually updated as information becomes available. The research includes notes from Milton Singleton (1888-1971) who was our enthusiastic family historian, records from the Family History Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, (IGI Records), Canadian Census records from 1871, 1901 & 1911, Ontario Birth, Marriage & Death records, and information from family members and fellow researchers.

The Singleton Coat of Arms is that of our Irish ancestors who came from Gorey, Wexford, Ireland.

Watch this space for information about the book,
THE SINGLETONS FROM IRELAND TO CANADA which will soon be available for purchase.

  • Singleton Coat of Arms (253 KB)
Heraldry dates from about the year 1200 AD and had its origin in the days of the use of coat armour when it was necessary in battle to use some outward sign on the shield, worn on the left arm, to distinguish persons as friends or foes. The shields were of various shapes on which the armorial designs were inscribed. Above the shield or helmet, the crest was attached by a piece of thin metal. The persons wearing the armour were known as knights or men at arms.
