About Our Family Research

This page was begun on Sept. 3, 2001, and will be updated as regularly as possible. Anyone who believes themselves to be related to us is welcome to email Toni at long.live.rock@attbi.com.

Our Skidmore/Scudamore ancestry can be traced directly back to William Skidmore/Skudemore, b. ca. 1595. His birthplace and parentage are unknown; he first surfaces in Kingswinford, Staffordshire (Birmingham area), England about 1614. This family may have originated from the Herefordshire Scudamore line, all of whom are believed to be descended from one Ralph de Scudemer, born ca. 1040 in Normandy, France; but it must be stressed that no link has yet been proven. Ralph was a master castle-builder who was brought to Herefordshire from Normandy before the time King William I (The Conqueror) to build castles along the Welsh border to keep the Welsh invaders out of England. Ralph is mentioned five times in the Domesday Book of 1086 A.D. as undertenant of several of the castles he helped to build. Further information about this huge family can be obtained from Warren Skidmore and William Frank Skidmore of the U.S., and Linda Moffatt of England. Please contact Toni for more details, or follow the Skidmore Genealogy link below.

Toni's paternal Bare family (variantly spelled Bär/Baer/Bear) are of German and Swiss-German origin. They can be traced directly back to Hans Bär, b. ca. 1545 in Hausen, Switzerland. The immigrant ancestor of our family was Hans Jakob Bär, b. 1677 in Hausen, Zurich Canton, Switzerland, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1719, appearing on a tax list in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1721.

Toni's maternal Walworth ancestors can be traced directly back to William Walworth, who was born about 1646 near London and emigrated to America from England about 1692. He shortly thereafter married Mary Abigail Seaton, who was said to be descended from "one of the earliest and most distinguished families of Scotland." William Walworth claimed ancestry from Sir William Walworth, twice Lord Mayor of London, born about 1320 in County Durham, who saved the life of King Richard II during a rebel uprising in London in 1381. Although I am getting closer, it's important to note that this connection has not yet been proven. William and Mary Walworth were the progenitors of all known Walworths in the U.S. prior to 1850.

Our Clifford line, recent British immigrants, married into the Walworth line in 1900. The Cliffords were from Finmere, Oxfordshire and Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, England. I have spent a considerable amount of time and effort cataloging all the Cliffords of Finmere through original research. A database of all Finmere Cliffords, and related families, is found in the Clifford/Clifton tree below. This database is large and can be unwieldy; if you cannot find your Clifford in the tree below, please email me and I will send you more information.

Newfound additions to our Swiss and German heritage are the lines of Kepler (Germany); Käser (Bern Canton, Switzerland); Hochuli (also Bern Canton, Switzerland); Hagedorn (Saxony, Germany); Jung (Württemburg, Germany); and Reiher (Württemburg, Germany). More information about these lines will be posted here as it becomes available.

Related family names: Bär/Baer/Bare (Germany/Switzerland/US); Bickel (Germany/US); Clifford/Clifton (UK); Critchley (UK); Edson/Edison (US-IN); Ferguson (Scotland/US); Hagedorn (Germany/US); Hochuli (Switzerland); Jung/Young (Germany/US-MD); Käser/Kaeser (Switerland/US); Kepler (Maryland, US/Germany); Noquet (France/UK); O'Brien (Ireland/US); Ossowksi (Poland/US); Skidmore/Scudamore (UK/US); Reiher/Royer (Germany, US-PA); Snyder (Switzerland/Germany/US); Thomas (US-MD); Tims (UK); and Walworth/Walsworth (UK/US). Thanks for visiting, and happy (ancestor) hunting!
