About Our Family Research

I started out completing a family tree that my grandmother had began years ago and this is what has grown from there.

Just a few of the names in our family are:
Snelgrove, Fizzell/Frizzell, Rikley, Dafoe, Sidenius, Wicklund, Crosbie, Meeks and DeShane. On my husband's side there is: Barr, Galbraith, Paul, Rankin, Kerr, Moss, Fraser, Ketcheson, Ferguson, Dafoe, Smith and many more. Many of our ancestors came to Ontario, Canada as United Empire Loyalists; Scottish immigrants to the Lanark area; Palatinates to Ireland then Lennox & Addington, Denmark/Sweden or from England to Northumberland County in the mid 1800's.

The majority of my information did come from family papers, bibles etc. but I have received further data from other sources and I thank them for all of their help. Special thanks to Myrtle (Frizzell) Windover, Carol Steele, Helen Meeks, Nancy Owston & Peggy Briscoe. I could not have accomplished so much, in such a short amount of time, without your generous help and support.

Other family information is from The Ketcheson Family,
Crosbie Family Tree by Julia (Crosbie) James, and Meeks Inheritance with Loyalist Connections by Gwen M. Smith. Please note that not all information has been verified so if you have any additions/corrections please let me know.

If you are researching any of these families please let me know and I will be happy to share any information I have. I have quite a bit of information on most of the families mentioned within, as well as information on siblings, spouses, children and extended families. This information can be found at my other website, however due to privacy issues a password is required. If you are researching these families specifically I am happy to share any information I have, so just let me know.

United Empire Loyalist in Canada Following the American Revolution (1775-1783), immigrants who had settled in the United States still remained loyal to the British Crown. There were an estimated 40,000-50,000 Loyalists who were viewed as traitors and were often referred to as “Tories”. Loyalist families were stripped of their land and most of their possessions by the American colonists and were forced to leave their homes, often with only the shirts on their backs. In about 1783-5, most of our Loyalist ancestors traveled by way of the Hudson River to the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. Some stayed in Quebec for a short while but most continued down the St. Lawrence to Cataraqui (Kingston today) and eventually settled in Fredericksburg Township or Leeds and Grenville. Many of the men were members of the King’s Regiment of New York and some later belonged to various militias during the War of 1812.
