About Our Family Research

Hello, I have been researching my family for about 30+ years. I started with my mother's Burns & Shell side and have many brick walls that still exist today. Then in 1998 I started on my father's Nicholson - Corbin side.

I believe in sharing family research without strings attached and welcome email. I do ask that if you find an error or questionable information on this site, please send me an email so I can research it and make a correction.

I obtained my historical information from census records, tax lists, funeral home records, military rosters, pensions, land grants, deeds, wills, many, many books, marriage certificates, death certificates, courthouses, libraries, clerk's offices, birth certificates, newspapers, obituaries, Library of Virginia, Library of Congress, etc and most important fellow researchers.

I have tried to verify all information, however, I am sure that there are errors. I am constantly working with this file making corrections; verifying; and making additions and deletions.

I cannot guarantee everything in this file as being fact. I wasn't there, I didn't see it. But, I can give you sources of almost all my information. Of course, I was there and can verify some of it!

Another important thing, I demand sources for whatever someone gives me. I try to get their source info unless they are the immediate relative.

If they don't know or won't give you this information (yes, there are people like that), then don't use the information until you have verified it for yourself.

Now, there are exceptions to the above - diaries, family histories, bible records, etc. We must just accept these items as they are and verify them if possible with vital records where available. I have had many people send me their researched family history to add to my file and it is most appreciated.

Of course, as we all know, sometimes that documentation is erroneous. The documents are only as accurate as the original source. I have found census taker errors, death certificate errors(I expect these are the 2nd worst offenders, census being the first) and birth certificate errors.

I hope you enjoy this site and please drop me an email if you have any questions. You may reach me at tnkinhunting@aol.com or at ladygardner@netzero.net.

This poem was written by John T. Nicholson about his father John "Russ" Nicholson and the removal of the families from the Shenandoah National Park. It is a heart wrenching poem that reflects the pain of being forced to leave the homes that they loved. He was my grandfather's brother.
