Notes for Mary Jane Tatum:

Notes for Milton James Smith:
Milton James Smith, a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church, one of several who transferred their membership to newly formed Briar Branch Baptist Church near Ammon, Bladen County, North Carolina in October, 1843. It would appear that Milton was not married at that time. It would also appear that his future wife, Mary Jane Tatum, daughter of Theopolous Tatum, was also single and shown in the roll as Mary Jane Tatum.
If they were not married prior to "the fourth Lords Day in October of 1843" , then the first two children of Mary Jane and her second husband, John J. Downing shown in the 1850 Census of Bladen County, "Phebe" age 7, and "Thomas" age 5 should be Smith rather than Downing. This logic suggests that Phebe and Thomas were step children of John J. Downing.
