Joel was scalped by Indians He was buried in Paradise, Lancaster, PA, Ferree Cemetery. He served in the military as an Arms contractor in Revolutionary War providing the Army with firearms. He was a Gunsmith. Joel may have learned gunsmithing from his cousin Phillip LeFevre, son of Isaac LeFevre and Catherine Ferree. It was believed that knowing they were going to live in the wilderness of the New World, Isaac trained in gunsmithing while in Germany. When Joel reached maturity, he received a land grant from his father and set up a rifle making shop. During the American Revolution, he made gun barrels or guns or both. He extended his works, employed a larger force of men and turned guns out for the Government at the rate of 30-40 per week. Gunlocks were said to have been imported by a German. The family continued to speak German for several generations.

Mike,
I was looking at your information and saw you too have come up against the problem of Leah and Peter Baker's children. I was just wondering if you have been able to resolve the problem. I have the family information that goes back to Balthassar Becker but am now finding there are major problems with the fact that Peter Becker 1710 m. Leah, as her father's will in 1753 has her unmarried and all the children listed for this marriage were born before this time. I have also seen her married to Peter, Jr, supposedly Peter 1710's son, but do not have listing of
their children. If you can give me any kind of help here I would really appreciate it. I have done research on the Ferree family but am thinking there may not really be any connection. Do you have any dates on Leah's husband Peter from the cemetery? I would really like to get this straightened out.

Wanda

Subject: Leah Feree

I was reading through your genealogy report, and it was very interesting. I Descend from the Leah Feree and Peter Baker. I cannot really help you on their children, except Joseph Baker. I have seen probably 6 different family files on Peter and the just never agree entirely. I do know that Peter was also married to Charlotte O. Lay (O'lay?) My information comes from a DAR report which came primarily from a Baker Family Bible, Monument records, and court records. The following is the document. I think some of the sons, as well as George had Peter for a middle name.

Peter Baker and his four sons emigrated to America about 1730. The four sons are George, Henry, Jacob, and Peter,Jr.

George Peter Baker b. 1657 married Christian Dillion.
Son:Peter Baker, b. 1710 , married first Leah Faree(?), second Charlotte O. Lay
Son: Joseph Baker, b. 1747, died 1786 (now Wythe) married Nannie Smith
Son:Joseph Baker, Jr. , born 1767, died 1870 Wythe Co., married 1793, Elizabeth Alford
Son: Joseph McClure Baker m. Jane Jackson March 16, 1837
Daughter:Margaret Baker, born april 5, 1794 Wythe Co. died Jan 4, 1887, Married Berry Hurt Oct 29, 1815.
Daughter: Elizabeth Hurt Married Joseph S. Baker Feb 27, 1837 bond Joseph McC. Baker
(this is my gr-gr-gr grandfather)
this was published in the Appalachian Note.
Joseph Joel Baker (son of Peter and Leah) who married Nannie Smith was killed by two slaves in 1786, in Montgomery Co. VA.(now Wythe). His son Joseph J. remained in Wythe, while Joseph S. and his descendents lived in Carroll Co. VA, except for my gr-gr-grandfather Joseph Monroe Baker who moved to Indiana about 1870. I have quite a bit on the VA Bakers once they got to Montgomery Co. I think they were in Shennadoah Co. an Isaac and Joseph were listed with Dunsmore VA (now Shennadoah Co) under Captain Bowman's list. in 1758 John, Jacob, and Peter Becker (Baker) were on th Lebanon twsp. Lancaster Co. PA assessment list. In the Descendents of "Andy Baker" genealogical report, John S. and Peter Baker were mentioned as being German gunsmiths in Lancaster Co. Andy Baker's descendents (English) robert, John and Caleb were in Lancaster Co. also and were Gunsmiths. An Isaac Baker was on a tax list in Fredericks Co. VA. Land records involving Christopher, Frederick, George, Henry, William and Peter are on the Net in Rockbridge Co.VA. Isaac Baker also provided the eye witness account of the Indian Raids in the Shennadoah Valley November 1755 for the Annapolis Gazette. Basically, I have found several names in the migration pattern of the Bakers, but no evidence of who they were. Supposedly for those who were gunsmiths, the move toward the iron and lead mines of VA was to be closer to the steel they needed for their trade.

Of the files I have seen on Peter and Leah, a couple separated out those Children of Charlotte and those of Leah, but I can't remember if they agreed. Each generation seemed to use the same first names over and over, so it is really hard to tell. The were alot of Beckers (Bakers) in the area. I don't know if I have been any help, but you are welcome to anything I have. I have my files on Family Tree Maker. One of curious things my line did is that for some reason, the started adding Mc to their names. It started with the second Joseph. In the census it Joseph McBaker, his son was Joseph McClure Baker. Joseph S. Baker casually used Mc in his name and his oldest son is Isaac Mc. Baker. Strange for a German Family.

I bookmarked your homepage, so if I find anything else, I will get it to you.

Thanks for the info
Mike Parton
