Notes for W
ALTER DAVIS:
A Scotch-Irish emigrant for Londonderry, he and his wife settled on a farm near London Grove, below Paradise. He was pf that branch of the Davis family that settled about Pittsburgh and had come to this country intending to join them. His voyage was over the southern route, and it took him 90 days to sail from Belfast, Ireland, to New Castle, Delaware, where he landed. While traveling through Lancaster County he was so pleased with the country and the people, that he secured work and remained there all his life.

He was an austere man and a stricy churchman and a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church at Paradise. His honesty was such that it was a common saying long after his death in that part of the country, to say a man was "as honest as Walter Davis".

He died in 1866 and was buried in Caprenter's Graveyard, while his wife, Rachel, survived him by 20 years and died at the home of her daughter, Sarah, in Harrisburg, PA, June 21, 1886 and was buried there.

I have some information to pass along about Mary Ferree, whom you have to be a daughter of Joel Ferree, and who married William L. Pirtle and was born c1818.

I have the following obit from the Terre Haute Star, pg. 9, Tues, Feb 26, 1907:

"Mrs. Mary (Serlee) Markee, 77 years old, one of the pioneer residents of Haddon Township, died at 1 o'clock this afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. F. Alumbaugh, here, after a long illness resulting from a stroke of paralysis.

Mrs. Markee was born in near Paxton, this county, and married William L. Pirtle in 1850. Pirtle died in 1853 and his widow married Isaac Newton Markee in 1856. Markee died in 1883, and since that time Mrs. Markee had made her home with her daughter. She is survived by four children, Mrs. W.Q. Rogers of Loogootee, Mrs. Frank Buckley of Monett, MO, Mrs. J.F. Alumbaugh of this place and William Markee of Chicago. The Funeral will be held at the Carlisle Christian Church Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Burial will be in the Carlisle Cemetary."

This 1907 obit gives her age as 77 years. Her birthdate, then, would be closer to 1830. While the obit says Serlee, the information in the body of the obit points directly to the marriage records of Sullivan Co. and the marriage of Mary to William L. Pirtle. Also, to support the fact that her surname was Ferree and the newspaper made a typo, there is a 20-yr old Mary Ferree enumerated on pg. 395 in Hadden Twn. in the 1850 census in the home of Thos. Ledgewood. She is enumerated next to 25 yr. old William L. Pirtle (also living in the Ledgewood household), whom she would marry two months later. She then married Isaac N. Markee, a nephew of my ancestor Margaret (Markee) Browning, on 29 May 1856 in Sullivan County.

As the census info and the obit seems to strongly suggest that the Mary Ferree who married Pirtle and then Markee was b. c1830 and not c1818 as was the Mary who was the daughter of Joel and Mary (Leeth) Ferree, I am wondering if perhaps there are two Marys? I don't know for sure, but I was wanting to pass this info on to you for your information. The obit doesn't mention parents....who could they be?

Response:

Brother of Joel Ferree, Philip Copeland Ferree is the father of the Mary Ferree who married Isaac Marker and Wm. Pirtle. Philip was born 6/11/1804 and died 10/1847. He married Margaret Trimble (1806-1837). Joel's daughter Mary b. 1810 married Abel Carey Pirtle in 1827.
