Notes for J
OHN QUINCY ADAMS BENSHOFF:
John Quincy Adams Benshoff died as a result of the Johnstown flood. He is mentioned in the text of the book, "The Johnstown Flood", by David G McCullough, 1968, published by Simon and Schuster:

Jacket: " May 31, 1889 Roaring down from the mountain, a wall of water, in some place 70 feet high, smashed through Johnstown, Pa. killing, in a matter of minutes, 2,000 men, women and children, leaving in its wake not only tragic destruction but a national scandal.."

Page 168: : Outside twisted wreckage, tank cars, freight cars, and what appeared to be every house in sight, went tumbling passed the window. The Rev. Beale saw J. Q Benshoff, Johnstown's leading bookseller, go by. Mrs John Fulton and her daughter, and two small children clinging to a roof, both of them nearly naked..."

From the writing's of Harry Benshoff - John's son about the Johnstown Flood:

"The flood of 1889 leveled our large 2 story brick building to the ground. Of five persons in one room on the second floor, I was the only one to survive...My brother, Arthur, was killed outright, and my father John Quincy Adams Benshoff, died nine days later from the effects of the flood. The building contained our book and stationery store, photograph gallery and a dwelling. We had bought the building just two months before, and I, at the age of twenty, was given a partnership, and we were all set to do big business."
