Notes for E
LIZA JANE BLACKBURN:
Eliza Jane McMahan's home place was what is now called "The King Place" situated one mile west of Bridgeport, Illinois, on Highway #50 (to St. Louis, Missouri) where it is crossed by a road going to the small town of Petrolia.

Eliza Jane lived in a small frame house which stood to the west of the present "King House" built in 1886. The small frame house was still standing close to the "King House" as late as 1920.

Sometime after Barnabus McMahan, Eliza Jane's husband died, she was left with this big farm to handle--must be 300 or 400 acres-maybe more, as Dr. Tom Kirkwood and I drove past it, Saturday, August 13, 1977- and it extended more than 1/2 mile on the Petrolia road and I do not know how far on Highway #50.

Sometime later, Eliza Jane McMahan married John McGuire and moved to his home in Lukin Township---several miles west and south of her former home.

Times were bad, John McGuire's first wife had died--there were several small children to care for, and evidently Eliza Jane paid little mind to the fact that taxes were becoming delinquent on the old Home Place.

Civil War was imminent--her sons, Constantine and William McMahan had gone to war--Seraphine had married James Benjamin Wright, a circuit riding minister with 4 little children--and they were starting a family of their own.

So when it came time to pay Back Taxes, no one seemed inclined to do so, as each one had all he could handle, as the saying goes.

William McMahan wrote in detail of his experience in the Civil War--of how he was in battles in Tennessee and Mississippi--how he had been shot in the right hand and right thigh--I saw the letter he wrote, (in possession of Allie May (Foss) Fyffewho has contributed so much to the Blackburn - McMahan - Wright Genealogy--with his left hand - since his right hand was wounded--and he couldn't use it. He was apologizing for poor penmanship--yet I thought it very beautifully written. Allie May had this original letter sealed in plastic.

At the end of the War, William didn't return. The homeplace was delinquent in taxes--and was being sold for taxes. William was presumed dead--but--really had married and gone to Missouri--not returning for 30 years. The "Kings" had bought the homeplace "for taxes". The Kings were disturbed, after his return, for he had not been notified of the tax sale, and they were concerned he'd try to make trouble----or be succesful in redeeming the land. Legally the Kings were in error--for all heirs needed to be notified----but fortunately for them----he didn't contest it.

My Mother told me that my grandfather, Judge Stephen C. Lewis, tried to get Seraphine Wright to reclaim the homestead before Naomi became of age---which would have been about 1905 or so---but she refused.

What a pity----for the "King's Property" became one of the richest oil producing acreages in Lawrence County----so may wells producing from so many sands!!!!

As an indication of the richness--there were 13 oil wells on a half acre near the farm, that I know of in Petrolia, which was called "Hells' Half-Acre."

Hi Michael, I was looking at the Lawrence Co site and saw your query. I have looked at your website also. A lot of work there!! I have been meaning to contact you about Barney McMahan and Eliza Blacburn but haven't had the time. I am descended from this couple and can give you lots of info on them. So I will do so soon. You live in Redmond if I remember right? I live on Vashon Island, so we are sort of neighbors! Also the website coordinator, Mary Kozy, was part of a seminar given by SKGS yesterday. So that got me going to websites and I have already gotten lots of new info on my Johnson family.
