SOURCE NOTES:

From his gravestone inscription in Taylor Cemetery, Gallatin, TX we confirm his birth and death and find that he served in the Texas Cavalry, CSA.
Neri Bridges
Co I
35 Texas Cav
1847-1887

A request was made to the National Archives for the military records of Neri BRIDGES. The record received shows Neri as part of Co I, 35th Cav. (Likens) Texas and records him as "Sick. Left by surg. at Houston." The record was not dated. A copy is in my file.

What we know of his military service comes from his widow's application for a pension from the State of Texas. Neri BRIDGES enlisted in 1862 (at the calculated age of 15-16 years old) and served until he was discharged in 1865, having served three years. He was a Private in the Cavalry, having served in "Company "I", Lackens' Regiment, Terrell's Brigade." which was formed in Rusk, Cherokee Co., TX. The 35th (Likens) Regiment Texas Cavalry was formed October 23, 1863, by consolidation of Likens' and Burns' Battalions and Captains Gray's, Hurley's and Mullins' Companies, 37th Regiment Texas Cavalry. [Texas Pension #39328]

Family history remembers that Neri came home sick from the service, and that he died of black jaundice or kidney problems.

In 1875 Neri BRIDGES married Brancie DAVIS. Their marriage was first found in Brancie's Widow's Application for a Pension. It is recorded in the Cherokee County Clerks office, however, the record only shows the license. It was never completed (solemnized) and returned. The date of the license is 2 Oct 1875. A copy is in my file. [Marriage License, 1875]

Neri is pronounced "knee-rye".

In 1880 census had a black servant, William Lewis, who worked on the farm.

Neri BRIDGES was considered a land owner near Piney Grove about 3 miles from Gallatin , TX. However, to date no record of deed has been found. When his wife, Brancie (DAVIS) BRIDGES died, his oldest son, Wylie got the house, however his wife didn't know what to do with it. Wylie's daughter, Beulah wanted to restore it, but nothing ever happened. Buddy KELLEY, son of Ethel (Bridges) KELLEY has pictures of the house and at one time had some timber from the building. [Kelley, 14 Nov 1996]

RANCIE ANN DAVIS:
[Global HAL.FTW]

Brancie Ann Davis was the daughter of George Washington DAVIS and Anna Caroline SCURLOCK. For her complete genealogy, see the DAVIS lineage later in this history. The date of birth for Brancie is probably right. In her application for a pension from the State of Texas, as Neri had served in the Tex CSA, she listed her age as 77 years old on 11 September 1923. Although it has been thought that she was born in Texas, in her application she stated she was born in Alabama. Since she also stated she had lived in Texas for 75 years, she apparently moved there when she was 2 or 3 years old. [Note that the 1880 Census, Cherokee Co., TX shows place of birth for Brancey A as Texas]

We learn the following from the Widow's Application for a Pension, filed by Brancie BRIDGES:
On 13 Sep 1923, Mrs. Brancie BRIDGES, widow of Neri BRIDGES filed a Widow's Application For A Pension with the State of Texas. It was approved 27 Sep 1923 with the pension being allowed from Sep 1st. At the time she was living in Gallatin, Cherokee Co., TX
Two people (M.A. JENKINS and S.B. PEACOCK) signed witness statements that (1) they had served with Neri BRIDGES in the Army; and (2) that Brancie BRIDGES was in fact the widow of Neri BRIDGES, and (3) that Brancie had "been a bona fide resident citizen of the State of Texas since prior to January 1, A.D. 1900..."
Mr. P. B. Musslewhite, the State and County Assessor in Cherokee Co. TX certified that Mrs Brancie BRIDGES had a "homestead of the value of seven hundred ($700.00) Dollars, and of other property, real or personal, or both, of the value of Three Hundred Sixty ($360.00) Dollars.

From the Application for Mortuary Warrant, which was attached to the Widow's Application for a Pension file we know that Brancie (Davis) BRIDGES died 6 Jan 1934. She died in the home of her son, J.R. BRIDGES with whom she was living, in Gallatin, TX. Since she had been receiving a pension, the son requested a warrant to pay for all or part of the funeral expenses. Mr Roy L. Swofford, the undertaker certified the death and the application. Dr. C. L. Newburn, 421 South Bonner, Jacksonville, Tx, listed the ailments of Brancie at the time of her death as "senility." [Texas Pension #39328] Her Death Certificate on file at the Cherokee County Clerks Office has her death at 2:20 a.m. [Cherokee County Clerk, TX, Vol 8, page 320]

Granddaughter Ethel D. (BRIDGES) KELLEY tells the story that Brancie BRIDGES was to be buried with husband at Taylor Cemetery but the creek between them was "up over the bottom" and so they buried her at Piney Grove. Piney Grove is about 3 miles from Gallatin. [Kelley, 14 Nov 1996]
