Notes for J
EREMIAH SMITH:
Jeremiah " Jerry " Smith was born in Morgan County Tennessee about 1794...He came to Clay County
Kentucky when he was a small boy...These were dangerous times for the Pioneer Families that came to
the newly formed State of Kentucky...The War for Independance was over and the Western Lands had
been explored and opened by Daniel Boone and the Long Hunters many years before Kentucky became a state...it would be many long years before peace came to the area...The Indians were becoming increasingly hostile at the incursions
into their hereditary hunting grounds and they were attacking and killing settlers all across the State...
Young boys and men had to be proficient with their " Long Rifles " knives and hatchets, their lives often
depended on it...as a result they were suburb marksmen...

In the summer of 1812 the call went out for volunteers to fight the British and young Jeremiah Smith who
had just turned eighteen years old, enlisted in the 1st Company, Second Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Milita...this company was comprised of hand-picked sharpshooters...In September, they mustered at the
mouth of the Licking River, near present day Covington Kentucky...During the winter of 1812-1813 they
participated in numerous raids and skirmishes in the areas near Fort St. Marys, Fort Recovery, Fort Defiance and Fort Jennings on the Northwest Frontier...The winter of 1812-1813 was a particular cold and bitter winter and several men died from sickness...

In the spring of 1813 the men marched south to the Licking River and were discharged on March 13, 1813...Jeremiah returned to Clay County and on September 11, 1813, he married Elizabeth Jones, daughter of William Jones...using a land grant, given to him for his service in the War of 1812, Jeremiah and Elizabeth settled near present day Buckhorn Kentucky...there was a fine spring there and Jeremiah had killed a Buck and he hung the antlers in a tree and called it the Buckhorn Spring...sad to say, but this spring is now covered by the Buckhorn Lake...

Jeremiah and Elizabeth owned about five thousand acres of land around Buckhorn, Squabble Creek and Otter Creek...they raised ten children and their descendants are a virtual whos who of the families living in the surrounding area today...some of the families are Eversole, Begley, Gay, York, Gross, Ingram, McIntosh, Johnston, Gilbert, Bowling, Morris, Allen, Burns, Baker, Helton and many others, too
nunerous to mention...

Jeremiah Smith was a very interesting character and from all accounts, an exceedingly clever man as well...he rests today beneath a huge oak tree on a hillside in Buckhorn Kentucky, the small town and community that he founded so long ago...
