Otto was brother to Hermann Heinrich Friedrich, both sons of the saddler Heinrich Christian and Ernestine Auguste (Schuster) Friedrich of nearby Zwötzen bei Gera (Zwötzen, suburb of Gera). Brother Hermann immigrated to the United States and established the Friedrich family in California. Otto, a spinner by trade, remained in Germany.
