25. WILLIAM ABSOLAM6 WELDON (ANDREW5, JACOB4, JACOB3, ISAAC2, JOHN1) was born 03 March 1800 in Meriweather Co., Georgia, and died 1868 in Shelby Co., AL. He married (1) NANCY HILTON Bet. 01 July 1823 - 1824 in Pike Co., GA (see notes for Absalom Weldon), daughter of WILLIAM HILTON. She was born Abt. 1805 in NC, and died Abt. 1860 in Sequatchie Co, TN. He married (2) JOSEPHINE HARPER 28 December 1861 in Harris Co., GA. She died Unknown.

Notes for W
Marriage date is listed by Ralph Oneal Weldon as Dec 28, 1861. Since first wive Nancy Hilton did not die until 1880, further research needs to be done.

Tommie Stapleton,

Reference your recent message on the Weldon GenForum:

"I recently received a large printout of the Weldon line from Ralph
Oneal Weldon of Arkansas. He lists Absalom Weldon, Born. March 3, 1800, married
Nancy Hilton Jan 7, 1824; she was born Abt. 1805 and died in 1880. One
child was born:
Amanda M. Weldon, born between 1842-1843. She married John Henry Kennedy
and they had 8 children.

He lists as another wife: Josephine Harper, married Dec 28, 1861.

Is this the same as your William Absalom Weldon who married Nancy Hilton.
I'm wondering which dates are correct and if Absalom's full name was
William Absalom or not.

Ralph is from the Jacob Weldon (Richmond Co., GA c. 1780's). There was at
least one other Absolam Weldon in that family that can be found in the
mid-1800's. This Absolam seems to have remained in Georgia.

William Absolam Weldon, born c. 1794-6, was very likely either the son of
Isaac Weldon of Pike/Meriweather Counties, GA or of an Isaac Weldon, son of
Jonathan Weldon (d. 1782, Pittsylvania Co., VA), who lived in Abbeville, SC
at the time of William Absolam's birth. I have information somewhere that
states William Absolam's father was named Isaac. And William Absolam may
have been part native American. I'm not sure if the two Absolam's aren't
mixed up in some genealogies.

William Absolam Weldon had a number of children (Elbert, Isaac, James,
William, etc.). He settled in Shelby County, AL in the same location my
family would settle some 10 or 15 years later. Descendants still can be
found in that area (Chelsea, AL). My line is back through Jonathan Weldon
(Pittsylvania Co., VA). Until I find definitive proof William Absolam was
from the line of Jacob, I'm going to assume there's a chance he may be the
son of Isaac Weldon of Abbeville, SC. I hope this is cleared up one day
with good data.

D. Weldon

Notes for N
e-mail note from (Sept 2003):

Absalom's wife Nancy Hilton was 1/2 Eastern Cherokee (mother was full blooded Cherokee). She was buried in Sequatchie Co, TN. about 1860. Her father was William Hilton. I have no info on him.

Further note from website (2004):

Amanda's sisters, Sarah and Mary, and her brother, William, all applied for shares in the Eastern Cherokee settlement of 1909. The applications were all rejected as incomplete. None of the siblings were able to adequately provide the required lineage to prove their Cherokee ancestry. For years, there have been stories in this family that Amanda was full Cherokee, but no proof has surfaced. The siblings who applied for membership and settlement in 1909 believed it was either Nancy or her mother who was referred to by the name "Bag."
