John P was born 26 June
1852, the son of Allen German Bailey and Edna Strong. His four sisters, Martha,
Indiana, Kanetta, and Flora, and younger brother Zachariah died young. Their graves
in the Bailey Family Cemetery were unmarked until someone recently set up bare
plaques. His father, Allen German Bailey, was killed in the battle of Drury’s
Bluff in 1864 when John was 12 years old. Edna remarried soon after to a Mr.
Finch. The only children of Allen G and Edna that reached maturity and had
families were John P and younger brother Thomas J Bailey. It appears the John P
inherited the lands and home of his father and the inheritance was passed on to
his children. Our aunt Mary Steppe Booth remembers Uncle Thomas but John P died
2 July 1887 at age 35, shortly after the birth of his last child Willie Allen
Bailey.
Martha was born in Missouri
15 May 1858, the daughter of William Henry Moses and Mary Eleanor Fleshman.
Soon after her birth the family shipped back to Virginia, the father either
abandoned the family or missed the boat. Martha and John P were married 19 Dec
1877. After John P died she remarried to Lewis E DePriest, 3 Aug 1892 a widower
whose first wife had died in childbirth. The living grandchildren of John P and
Emma remember them as Grandpa and Grandma DePriest, all with the greatest
respect. Martha died 18 March 1941. Lewis went to live with relatives in
Maryland, but when he died he was brought back to Virginia and buried beside
Martha and John P. The obituary of Martha claims 24 living grandchildren, but
this list shows 25. This list of children and grandchildren is believed to be
complete.
