funeral thursday. mrs beulah stephens drinkuth , aged 75, 213 ash street, an activeand devout leader in the first methodist church of newport for more than 30 years , died in a local hospital wed., after an extended illness. beulah dyer was born at west point , white county the daughter of isaiah + sarah (foster) dyer, and moved to newport as a child. her father was in the grocery business here. she was married dec. 4, 1911 to theodore saxon stephens, a member of the well known stephens family. he died in 1925. six years later she was married to john howard drinkuth, who proceeded her in death three years ago. both mr and mrs drinkuth were for years active in masonic and eastern star lodges. as a member of the order of the eastern star she was a past worthy matron. she also served during the eastern star grand lodge meetings. mrs drinkuth was a life member in the first methodist church. she was past president of the what-so-ever club, a charter member of the wesley-an service guild and several years ago was given a life membership in the woemn's society of christian service due to her many church activities and service in that organization. for many years of her married life she lived directly across laurel street from the church and her home was used by many of the visiting clergy-men as they visited first methodist. she is survived by 3 sons, guy , t s stephens of newport and mart stephens of little rock, and by 2 daughters, mrs howard collins of shreveport LA , and miss floryne stephens of newport AR. 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. funeral services will be held thursday at 2pm at the first methodist church by the rev. ben jordan pastor pallbearers will be bobby fortune , clyde fortune , william keedy , ray o fann and f m "crackie" parker all of newport and doyle rogers of batesville. burial will be walnut grove cemetery with dillingerfuneral home in charge of arrangements. * newport weekly independent friday dec 9, 1966 card of thanks we wish to thank our friends and neighbors for their many acts of kindness during the extended illness and death of our mother, mrs j h drinkuth. we are expecially grateful to those who sent food and floral offerings. sincerely , miss floryne stephens , mrs howard collins , guy stephens , mart stephens, t s stephens ************************************************************************************************************** john hoel (1841)IL iroquois - (1918)AR sebastian aug 29, 1918 ft smith AR Obit as appeared in The Southwest American, Fort Smith, August 29, 1918. She was born April 25, 1914 at Stegall, the daughter of Pearl Perry and Mary Callie (Camp) Stegall. Mrs. Siler was retired from the First National Bank, where she had served as Vice-President. She was a member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ. Mrs. Siler was a member of the Business and Professional Women, and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed needlepoint, and loved to travel. Mrs. Siler was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Siler; her parents; and one brother, Presley Pearl Stegall. She is survived by one step-daughter, Joyce Hilger; two step-grandchildren, Zane Hilger and Zanda Hilger, both of Texas; one sister, Wilma Lillard of Newport; one special sister-in-law, Bettie Stegall of Newport; four nephews, Jim Lillard, Randy Lillard, Perry Stegall, and Patrick Stegall; and two nieces, Kathy Cameron and Penny Nelson. AR p p stegall prominent citizen of grubbs died tues moring as a result of internal injuries. pearl perry stegall , aged 56 years , a prominent farmer , timber man and exemplary citizen died at 6:30 tues morning july 25 at his home nears grubbs, as a result of inflamation of internal injuries suffered in a sawmill accident , monday july 17. he had improved rapidly from the shock and appeared to be recovering, when a turn for the worse came about 11 oclock saturday night and he sank steadily , from that house. burial at parrott graveyard near tuckerman , wednesday afternoon. the deceased was a native of jackson county and was a member of the masonic and odd fellows lodges and he was in the highest esteem wherever he was known. he was a member of the baptist church and ever a most consistent christian. in his home he was dearly beloved by his wife and 3 children , milzie , pearl and mrs cora carter and to them is extended the heartfelt sympathy of many friends. *** july 1911 condition regarded serious , perry p stegall a good citizen of near grubbs , is reported to be in serious condition as the results of his injuries. dr oscar jones , who dressed his wounds went to see him again tuesday. mr stegall was hurt monday in his sawmill, when a pulley flew to pieces, one stick of wood striking him in the side of a hip? and lapping back to a point on the opposite shoulder. *********************************************************************** The following was taken from the Feb. 17, 1938 issue (front page) of the Newport Daily Independent stored on microfilm and available for viewing at the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock. _______________________________________________________________________ Mrs. Alice H (york) Stephens It was with sincere regret that Newport residents learned this morning of the death of Mrs. Alice York Stephens which occurred at her home on Laurel Street at 7:30 o’clock last night. Mrs. Stephens had fallen at her home about a week ago and sustained a broken hip and a fractured arm. From the time the accident occurred grave apprehension was felt about her and when a few days later she suffered a paralytic stroke those who watched so lovingly at her bedside knew that the end was not far distant. Mrs. Stephens was born in Jackson, Tenn., on Sept. 6, 1858. She was brought to Jackson county when a child by her parents and lived at Jacksonport before coming to Newport to reside. She married to Geo. K. Stephens, a member of a prominent pioneer family in this section, in 1877. Mr. Stephens was a Confederate veteran and preceded his wife in death by many years. He passed away in 1894. Mrs. Stephens was the mother of five children, all of whom have been dead for many years. She had no blood relations, excepting grandchildren. The grandchildren are: Guy, Miss Floryne, Mart, T. S., and Elizabeth Stephens, Mrs. Eddie Glass of Walnut Ridge, and Burrell Umstead of New Orleans. Four great-grandchildren also survive. Of a most gentle and kindly nature Mrs. Stephens was beloved by all who knew her. She was affectionately known as Granny to many of the younger generation and her passing has brought sorrow to those who loved her. She was a member of the First Methodist Church but because of infirmities had not been able to attend services for a number of years. Funeral services were held at the family home on Laurel Street this afternoon at 3 oclock by Rev. H. Mellen Fikes, pastor of First church, and many saddened friends and loved ones attended the last rites. Rev. Fikes spoke in eulogy of the fine life Mrs. Stephens had led and how she had borne her troubles and afflictions with Christian fortitude. The Choir of the church sang hymns Mrs. Stephens had loved, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, and Mrs. L. C. Scott sang The Old Rugged Cross as a solo. The many beautiful floral offerings were mute testimonials of the love and respect felt for Mrs. Stephens. Honorary pallbearers were Ira Best, Gustave Jones, R. C. Harder, Joe Younger, Jack Montgomery, and H. E. Sullivan. Active: Gus Jowers Sr., S. L. Burkett, Charles Taylor, M. A. Umstead, Latimer Hartsfield, and Lucian Daugherty.
