Descendants of Richard Rowe of Lydstep

Generation No. 1

1.  RICHARD1 ROWE was born  in of Ludstop? (Lydstep)  in the Parish of Penally1, and died 18 September 1693 in Lydstep, Penally, Pembs.1.  He married ?.  She died Bef. 1693.

Notes for RICHARD ROWE:

Richard was possibly descended from that John Rowe who was a listed as a freeholder (held lands by knight's service) of Penally in 1601 - no details given for the holding.  He was also probably  the brother or son of the Thomas Rowe who died in  1671.   It is also possible that Richard was related to Henry Rowe (d.1705) of North Down, Lamphey.

Was he the same 'Richard Row' who lived at Linney?  His daughter Katherine married a Mr. Lort.  The Lort family purchased the manor of Castlemartin.  George Lort, the younger, lived at Linney once home to the Row family.

In his will he mentions his grandchildren:

Martha Rowe

Katherine Rowe

Hestor Rowe

Mary Row

George Rowe

Stackpole Court

============

This, without doubt, was one of the grandest houses in Pembrokeshire, if not all Wales.  The earliest known owner was a Crusader, Sir Leonard de Stackpole (his effigy is in the local church).  His family did not remain long at Stackpole and the estate pased through an heiress to he Vernon family, of Haddon Hall in Derbyshire.  The Vernons preferred the comforts of Haddon to the then fortified house which was built by the Normans to keep out the Welsh.  The family's steward, George Lort, was left in charge.  Lort in the mid-16th century bought Stackpole from his employers, and took up residence.  His descendants became baronets and wer Royalists in the Civil Ware and garrisioned Stackpole for the King but they were forced to surrender.  The Lorts regained their influence at the Restoration but on the death of Sir Gilbert Lort, Bt., in 1698 Stackpole passed to his sister and heiress, Elizabeth who was married to a Scot - Sir Alexander Campbell, yr. of Cawdor.

The 5th Earl Cawdor spent most of his time on his Scottish estates and after the War his son decided  that the 150-roomed house would have to go, largely because of the confiscatory Socialist taxation in force at the time.  The sale of contents in 1962 was one of the most important ever to be held in South Wales.  The great house itself was demolished in the same year - a needless and wanton act.  The National Trust now owns the park.  (Source:  "Historic Houses of Pembrokeshire" by Major Francis Jones, 1996)

Extract from Pembrokeshire County History Vol. 4...  "John M. Griffiths, lesses of the prestigious Penally Court farm (440 acres) from the Picton Castle estate".... as per 1881 census return.

At the turn of the 17th century Court Leet became known as Penally Court Farm and  stood where Penally Farm stands today.  Fallowfield and Court House were both combined into Penally Court Farm.  In 1618 the Court House was threatened by ingress of the sea.  The 1786 Land Tax returns reveal Thomas Rowe as occupier of Court House.   Thomas died in 1791.  The present house at Penally Court Farm dates from 1858.
