2. JENKYN ELIOT2 ESQ (UNKNOWN1 ELIOT)2,3 was born in of
Earwer (Amroth). He married JONET BARET4, daughter of WILLIAM BARET and MARGARED HOWEL.
Notes for JENKYN ELIOT ESQ:
Jenkyn was descended from David Eliot of Earwear the founder of the
family who was bailiff to the widowed Countess of Pembroke in 1347. The Eliot family then held Earewear for the
next 4 1/2 centuries. The castellated
house, near the beach, known as Amroth Castle, was built, about 1800, by
Captain James Acland.
There seems to be some descrepancy with the earlier pedigree of the
Eliots from Jenkyn downwards until we come to his grandson John who married
Letys daughter of William ap David ap Gruyyddd of Kidwelly and Bonvile Court.

Erwer. He married ALS RYD11.
Notes for JOHN ELIOT:
It is possible that John might also have been first married to Jonet
Perrot and that she, secondly, married the other brother Philip. Non of this, of course, cannot be
proved. The pedigree here disagrees
with Lewis Dwnns Visitations, Vol. 1., P. 204, where Lewis Dwnn gives this John
Elliot as brother to John Elliot in the next paragraph. (Source "Pembrokeshire Families" )

Notes for JOHN ELIOT:
There appears to be some descrepancy with the ancestors of this John
Eliot. Some sources state him to be the
son John Elliot of Earwere, Esquire and Janet Perrott (Lewys Dwnn, Deputy
herald for Wales appointed in 1586).
Golden Grove MS (1765) and Evans MS state him to be the son of John
Elliot and Als Read, grandson of Philip
Elliot & Jenet Perrott. The copying
from Dwnn's original manuscripts is known to have contained some errors. I have gone along with the lineage as shown
on Golden Grove, Evans, and the Visitations for Wales for the Barrett family.

Notes for JOHN ELIOT,
ESQ:
John Eliot built the mansion at Westerton shortly before 1600.
WESTERTON, Ludchurch.
In 1600 Owen Elliot of Narberth who became High Sheriff in 1609, granted
a lease to his brother Morgan Elliot and his wife Anne, of his 'great new house
lately built by John Elliiot Esquire'.
This John (d. 1586)
was the father of Morgan and Owen and had himself been High Sheriff in
1585 and the house, in Ludchurch parish, was called Westerton and was
accompanied by four decayed messuages adjoining as well as other properties in
the same parish. Morgan was educated at
Oxford and died in 1628 without surviving issue when Westerton reverted to the
grantor. By 1786 the property belonged
to Lord Kensington.
In his will John mentions his youngest son Thomas Elliot and leaves him
an ambrey (dresser or wallpress) and also mentions "Summer Hill" but
this part of the will is torn and is not clear.

NARBERTH - PLAS (NARBERTH)
==========================
The former residence stood on rising ground just above the parish
church, within a bow shot of the medieval castle at the southern entrance to
the town. It was occupied (perhaps
built during Elizabethan days) by John Vaughan a member of the Vaughan family of
Pembre (Carm). descende from the Breconshire chieftain, Moreiddig Warwyn. John Vaughan died in 1580-81 leaving six
daughters, co-heiresses. His daughter
Jane received the mansion as part of her share, and married John Elliot of
Earweare (Amroth) who settled at his wife's home which remained in possession
of their descendants until the latter half of the 18th century when the estate
passed to the Mears family. In legal
documents the property is variously called Narberth Place, Narberth Place,
House Narberth House and also as Place and Plas.
In its heyday it had been commodious, and in the Hearth Tax List of
1670, it contained six hearths. The
last of the Elliot family to live there was Alexander and his wife Jane Barlow
of Lawrenny. Alexander died in 1755
without issue.

property was owned by Sir John Perrot.
In a deed dated 29 May 1584 he settled certain properties on his
'reputed son' James Perrot 'late of Westmede in the county of Carmarthen'. Prior to 1591, Janet, daughter of Prys
Dawkin of Westmead, married Robert Elliot a younger son of the family of
Eareware. Not long afterwards it became
the property of the distinguished Sir Sackville Crowe (created baronet in
1672). There is a sketch of the mansion

He married (2) ELIZABETH PHILIPPS44,45 1571 in Probably
in the private Chapel at Picton Castle, daughter of WILLIAM PHILIPPS and JANET PERROT.
Notes for GEORGE OWEN:
George Owen was first of all an antiquarian, who collected information
on genealogy, heraldry, historic governmental structures, and the like of
Wales. With this went an interest in the topography of Pembrokeshire and of
Wales, and associated with his study of topography were very insightful
observations of geological structures, in effect strata, though he did
not use that word, of limestone and coal. These observations have earned him a
reputation as the ancestor of British geology, though the observations were not
part of a conscious theory of geology.
His manuscript "Description of Pembrokeshire" was ultimately
published in 1892. He also composed a "Description of Wales" (as
later ages have entitled it) and a "Description of Milford Haven."
His father set him up with a considerable estate when George Owen
married. Later he inherited more,
including the lordship of Cemais [Kemes], and he added to his estate fairly
constantly. Vice admiral of the maritime
counties of Pembroke and Cardigan, 1573.
Commission of the Peace in Pembrokeshire. Deputy Lieutenant of
Pembrokeshire, 1587-90, 1595-1601. Sheriff of Pembrokeshire, 1587 & 1602. I
am not certain that Owen received compensation for these positions, but
apparently there was some income from fees, fines, etc.
Owen must be seen as the client of the Earl of Pembroke, under whom he
held the lordship of Cemais, and whose support he needed in constant struggles
for position within the squirarchy of the county. In 1595 he produced a map of
Milford Haven at the Earl's request, and at some point, probably later, a
genealogical catalogue of the Earls of Pembroke.
As Deputy Lieutenant, Owen was responsible for matters of defense,
especially for the defenses of Milford Haven, on which he made a number of
recommendations. He trained the county militia. These duties extended over some
fifteen years.

family of the Elliots, at which period it was called Eare Weare, has been
modernized into an elegant marine castellted villa, and is now the residence of
the Rev. Thomas Shrapnel Biddulph.

Mudlescwm
=========
Muddlescombe, Mudlescwm
A mile S of the priory church; it stands on low ground near the banks of
the Gwendraeth Fawr, overlooking Morfa Pinged, Penbre burrows and the sea
beyond. The property is on theborder of
St Mary & Pembre parishes, with lands in both, and the border going through
part of the house.
Lands at Mudlescwm are mentioned in 1342 and the "Manor of
Modelyscwm" in 1393, owned by minor landowners. It then probably became the property of the Dwnn family
(relatives of the herald Lewis Dwnn); Owen Dwnn was living there in 1436. It
passed to Trahaiarn Morgan (descended from Cadifor Fawr) by his marriage to
Owen's daughter Janet. It then passed by direct descent to Henry Morgan (d.
1564), William Morgan, Henry Morgan.
Henry's two daughters, Mary and Katherine, married two brothers, Anthony
and Francis Mansell. Eventually it passed through one of the female Mansel
lines to a
Jones. In 1738 Mrs Elinor Jones
sold the mansion and her share of the estate to the Pemberton family of
Trumpington Hall Cambs, who owned it until 1922.
After the gentry had ceased to reside there in the first half of the
18th century, much of the house was pulled down. The present farmhouse formed part of the original mansion, and
contains some of the features.

Notes for JOHN ELLIOT:
John Elliot was probably the same 'John Elliot' mentioned in "A History of Haverfordwest"
edited by Dillwyn Miles; if it was not
him, then it would have been his father also John Elliot.
"On 2 November 1642 the Pembrokeshire gentry were summoned to
Carmarthen to meet the
Marquess of Hertford, the Royalist commander in south Wales, who was on
a recruiting drive raising Royalist forces, but the response was not
encouraging. Among those who obeyed the
summons were Roger Lort of Stackpole, who had been commissioned to raise a
regiment for the King, and his brother Sampson Lort, of East Moor, and John
Eliot of Earwere, but John Wogan, Sir Hugh Owen, and Sir Richard Philipps,
excused themselves. While it has been
contended that the leading townsmen of Haverfordwest were inclined to support
the King's party and were able to prevent the Parliamentarians from taking a
decisive step, as they had done at Tenby and Pembroke, a letter, also dated 2
November 1642, written by Sir Hugh Owen, John Wogan and others, to the Earl of
Stamford, who held Hereford, stated that the town, like Pembroke and Tenby, had
been garrisoned for Parliament by the local trained bands, but John Wogan
warned Stamford that they would only be able to defend themselves 'for some
short time'". This is in the
chapter titled Haverfordwest and the Civil War.

WESTERTON, Ludchurch
====================
In 1600 Owen Elliot of Narberth, who became High Sheriff in 1609,
granted a lease to his brother Morgan Elliot, and his wife Anne, of his 'great
new house lately built by John Elliot Esquire'. This John (d. 1586) was the father of Morgan and Owen and had
himself been High Sheriff in 1585 and the house, in Ludchurch parish, was
called Westerton and was accompanied by four decayed messuages adjoining as
well as other properties in the same parish.
Morgan was educated at Oxford and died in 1628 without surviving issue
when Westerton reverted to the grantor.
By 1786 the property belonged to Lord Kensington and in 1839 the Hon.
William Edwardes was the owner. He
later became the 4th Lord Kensington.
In July 1974 Major Jones visited the house at the invitation of the then
