Descendants of
Peter Cornock & Elizabeth Hire of St. Ishmael's
Generation No. 1
1. PETER1 CORNOCK1 was born in of Marloes, Pembs.2,
and died Abt. 1754 in St. Ishmael's, Pembs..
He married ELIZABETH HIER3,4 9 July 1734 in St.
Mary's, Haverfordwest, daughter of ??? HIER. She
was born in of St. Ishmael's, Pembs5,
and died Bet. 18 February - 29 March 1755 in of St. Ishmael's, Pembs..
Notes for PETER CORNOCK:
It is possible that Peter Cornock was related to the Morgan family who
owned Great Hoaten as a Rowland Morgan was a trustee to Peter's will. It is believed that one of Peter's daughters
later resided at Great Hoaten and his great grandaughter, Margaret Rowe and her
husband Thomas Davies certainly lived there in 1841. Margaret and Thomas Davies's son was still farming at Great
Hoaten in 1881.
HOATEN, St. Ishmaels
==================
"In the westerly sector of the parish, near the boundary with St.
Brides, were the four messuages of Great-, Little-, Middle-Hoaten and Hoaten
Hill, all marked on Colby's map of 1831.
The most important of these was Great Hoaten, home of the Morgan family
in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Descended from the Carmarthenshire family of Morgan of Muddlecombe, Rhys
Morgan Esq. married Thomazin, daughter and heiress of John Sutton of
Haverfordwest, and had a son and heir, Henry Morgan described as 'of Hoaton' in
1577. Henry is named in documents of
1592-97, 1609, and 1625. He married
Janet, daughter of Griffith Wyrriot of Orielton, and had five sons and three
daughters. His family bore arms. Henry Morgan died in 1627 and he owned
extensive properties in the parish. The
next reference to the family occurs in legal documents in 1650 and 1656 when
John Morgan gent. dwelled at 'Hottowne' in St. Ishmael's parish. It is not known whether Thomas Morgan of
Great Hoaton in 1676 was a descendant; he died in 1715 and administration of
his will was granted to his widow Dorothy.
His inventory shows a value of £502, among his possessions being a
one-fourth share of a barque, and a part of three other boats."

Notes for ELIZABETH HIER:
In her will Elizabeth mentions "Philip Hire my dearly beloved
brother Cornelius Davis of Crabhall and John Allen of Bicton", but because
there are no punctuation marks within the sentence it is not clear whether
Elizabeth's brother was Philip Hier or Cornelius Davis. But a marriage of Elizabeth Hire to Peter
Corneck has been found at St. Mary's, Haverfordwest in 1734 so I now believe
Elizabeth was Elizabeth Hire.
Elizabeth's three children were all minors when she died as Philip Hier,
Cornelius Davis of Crabhall and John Allen of Bicton were named as their
guardians in Elizabeth's will (1755).

Circa 14th century - Ruins of the Court House
Listed Grade 2 by CADW.
====================================
'... the height of the surviving gable implies a building of
considerable size. 'Some of the walls
were supposed to have been 7ft. thick.
Sadly, little surves to give any cohesive impression of the size or
dignity of this ancient Court House estate.
It had clearly been the core of the demesne.
A Court Leet was held there twice a year to deal with misdemeanors and
disputes, at Easter and at Michaelmas.
The Lord of the Manor, Thomas Bowen, held the Court House and Buildings
and the land belonging to that house which amounted to about 80 acres value at
£4. 1. 2.
At the turn of the 17th century it became known as Penally Court Farm
and valued at £10. 6. 0. to the next Lord of the manor, John Philipps of
Picton.
1786 Land Tax reveals Thomas Rowe to be the occupier. He died in 1791 aged 64, and his son the
Reverend Thomas Rowe succeeded. He
married Ann Elliot, sister to Lettice Elliot who had married the Rev. John
Voyle.
After the death in 1820 of Reverend Thomas Rowe, his wife Margaret
Cornock leased the farm to William Waters of Knightsonas well as Penhallway at
a rent of £400 annually.
The Picton Castle Estate auctioned Penally Court at the Royal Gatehouse
Hotel in Tenby in 1941; it was bought by Dr. Charles Mathias.
