CRABHOLE

=========

A farmstead close to an inlet, about 6 miles north of Dale.  Home of a medieval family who bore the name of the property.  In the years 1384-1405 Philip Crabhole lived there.  During the 1500's the family of Loughor owned it, and were still there in 1666.  The Loughor family were probably tenants, for in 1637 it belonged to Sir John Wogan of Boulston.  The Wogans continued to own it, and in 1773 John Wogan of Boulston was the owner of Crabhole (309 acres) with Cornelius Davies (aged 60) as a leaseholder.  Gilbert Davis also owned Mullock Brownhill, and a descendant, Warren-Davis, were owners of Trewarren, a mansion in the neighbouring parish of St. Ishmael's.

WILL OF GILBERT DAVIS

====================

In his will Gilbert Davis left bequests to his grandchilden, also his sons Henry, Moses, Cornelius and Arron and to his daughters Alys Runwa and Elizabeth Grant.  The remainder was left to his wife Margaret with an "eight part share ye ship Henry Gwyn??? formally called ye Betty? with the house or houses that I have in Haverfordwest in the tenure of John Tucker, for her during her natural life and after her decease, to my youngest daughter Elizabeth during her natural life and after her decease to ye eldest son of my son Henry to him and his heirs for ever".

Elizabeth Grant (nee Davies) was the daughter of Gilbert Davies of Crabhall (ref. Will of Gilbert Davies).  It is possibly that she was a daughter by a previous marriage as he also mentions his youngest daughter Elizabeth in his will.  It would appear that this Elizabeth is unmarried as he makes provision for her in his will of his house or houses he has in Haverfordwest (in the tenure of John Tucker)  which are left to his wife Margaret for her natural life and then to his youngest daughter Elizabeth for her natural life and after her death to the son of his eldest son Henry, to him and his heirs forever.  It is therefore highly possible that Gilbert Davies had two daughters both named Elizabeth.

Notes for GEORGE ELLIOT:

George was sent out to Calcutta in 1780 as a writer, which was a junior grade of merchant for the East India Company, and died there at the age of 33.  The nature of his death caused something of a sensation at the time as he was struck by lightning.

George had a long liaison with an Indian, who bore him a daughter, Elizabeth.  In his will he mentions ;a natice woman now a resident of Calcutta named Marcimnissa the mother of my three children.'  The two other children were William Walter and Charlotte, also baptised and acknowledged.  Such liaisons were common in an India almost empty of European women.  The will goes on to mention 'my dearest and ever much beloved wife Rachel', who, as Rachek Dunkin, had married him in Calcutta in July 1792.

Notes for RIVERSDALE WILLIAM GRENFELL:

Riversdale's mother was Georginana St. Leger daughter of the 1st Viscount Doneraile of the 2nd creation.

"Have spent 4 hours today with Elliot's and Harries but without success. Found very little in my great grandfathers book only that Riversdale was reluctant for his daughter Georgina to marry my great grandfather and that "he married secretly, the match not being approved by his family and therefore there was no marriage settlement." "James Anthony Froude had married Charlotte Grenfell, while Charles Kingsley had married another sister, Fanny."  There is a whole Chapter in the book devoted to 4 years of struggling before they eventually married."

22.  JOHN5 GRANT (REV. MOSES4, ELIZABETH3 DAVIES, GILBERT2, UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1772 in of Nolton, Pembrokeshire.  He married MARIA PHILIPPA ARTEMISIA CHILD, daughter of JAMES CHILD and MARIA PHILIPPS.  She was born in of Begally House, Llandstadwell,  Pembrokeshire.

Child of JOHN GRANT and MARIA CHILD is:

                      i.    RICHARD BULKELEY-PHILIPPS6 GRANT, b. 7 June 1801, Narberth, Pembs.; d. 1857; m. (1) LADY ANNE JANE HOWARD; m. (2) ELIZA GORDON.

Notes for RICHARD BULKELEY-PHILIPPS GRANT:

 PHILIPPS (one ell, three pees) of Picton Castle pedigree (PHIL - HIPPOS = Horselover). When Richard, Baron Milford of Milford (in Ireland), seventh baronet of Picton Castle, Pembrokeshire died without issue on 23 Nov 1823, his will dated 21 Jan 1820 stipulated that any heirs to his estate must adopt the name PHILIPPS and the arms too. (blazoned:- 'Argent a lion rampant sable gorged with a collar and chain affixed thereto reflexed over the back or armed and langued gules.)  This was not surprising, for the name was a patronymic adopted by Meredith ap Philip ap Evan ap Madog ap Gwyllim ap Sir Aaron ap Rhys ap Bledri, Lord of Cilsant, ap Cadifor Fawr (who died in 1089). The huge estates of Picton Castle passed to the grandson of the Vicar of Roch, Rector of Nolton, Revd.  Moses GRANT, Dean of Roos Hundred, the young epileptic, Richard GRANT. This was lucky for Pembrokeshire, for Richard brought the railway and the means to develop the Pembrokeshire coalmines.  His maternal grandmother, Maria Philippa Artemisia PHILIPPS was the daughter of Bulkeley PHILIPPS of Abercyfor, near Carmarthen, the third son of 'Good Sir John' PHILIPPS, 4th Baronet of Picton Castle. Bulkeley's wife was Philippa or Phyllis, daughter of William ADAMS of Pembroke by his wife Philippa, daughter of Charles PHILIPPS of Haythog. Thus it is probable that Richard GRANT had a few Picton chromosomes in his genome. Of course, he could not call himself the 8th Baronet of Picton Castle. That title went to Sir Rowland Henry PHILIPPS - LAUGHARNE in 1823, son of FENTON'S friend and school-fellow, John Philipps LAUGHARNE of Orlandon and Pontfaen by his wife, Elizabeth ALLEN of Gelliswick. Thus our name-changers are as follows:-

(1) Richard Bulkeley Philipps GRANT ( assumed PHILIPPS name and arms 1824).  b. 7 Jun 1801, Narberth. bp. 23 Jun 1801 Nolton. son of John GRANT and Maria Philippa Artemisia CHILD ( of Begelly).

m.(1) 14 Oct 1824, Elizabeth, only dau. of John GORDON of Hanwell, Mddx.

m.(2) 8 Jun 1854, Lady Anne Jane HOWARD, dau. of 4th Earl of Wicklow.

Created Baronet 13 Feb 1828, created Baron MILFORD of Picton Castle 1847. MP for Haverfordwest 1826, 1830, 1837, 1841. died without issue * 3 Jan.1857 estate of Picton castle passing to his

half-brother.
