Includes NotesNotes for Johann Melchior Bierly:
[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 4, Ed. 1, Tree #3611, Date of Import: Dec 29, 2000]

On the passenger list his name was listed as Melchior Beerlie. There was also a Melchior Buhrly listed.
Melchior was born in Bavaria, Germany. In 1743 he took his wife and sons and immigrated to America. The name of the ship was the "Saint Andrew", and it was captained by Robert Brown. They left from Rotterdam and arrived in Philadelphia on October 7, 1743.
Melchior signed his name in the German way, "Melchior Buhrli", on the ship's list, but a crewman signed it the way it sounded in English, "Melchior Beerlie", on another list. The Bierly name has been spelled differently by different descendants of Melchior, such as; Byerly; Byerley; Beerly; Beerlie; Bierley; etc..
Because he was of German ancestry, Melchior had to take an oath of allegiance to the King of England.
Melchior's wife, whose name remains unknown, brought along a
beautifully ornamented bottle from the old country. In 1883 it was known that this bottle was a cherished possession of a grandson in Rebersburg, Centre County, Pa.
Melchior's four sons were believed to have all been born in Germany.
The Bierly family originally settled in Heidelburg Township,
Berks County, Pa.. Later in 1775 Melchior moved to along the Mahantango Creek in Shamokin Township, Northumberland County (now Snyder County), Pa.. He was either close neighbors to or lived with his son Anthony, who had also settled in that area. It is said that Melchior's wife became an invalid later in her life and that it became difficult to move her.
Indian troubles in 1778, principally the "Wyoming Valley Massacre", near Scranton, Pa., caused many whites to flee to the safer southern counties of Pa.. This fleeing of the settlers from the frontier was known as the "Great Runaway". Melchior also fled and moved to Lancaster County, Pa. where he spent the last days of his life. He found work in the local iron works. It is said that he died while travelling over some mountains to visit some friends. Where and when he died is not known.
