He built and owned several rental propertied in the Rock Hill SC area. He was able to educate all of his children on a meager minister's salary- three achieved Doctoral Degrees. He was adamant that his daughters be as well educated as his sons. He felt that a woman needed a good education the properly bring up her children even if she never worked. He was a tall, sandy redhead and very athletic. His children had great respect for him and and his household was a happy and secure one for the family. His wife was 10 years younger than he was and she was totally dependant on him. He did most of the shopping and all of the money managing. Wilmot, called "Brownie' by close friends, had a great love of family, the Presbyterian Church, and the outdoors. After marrying he was working for the National Aeronautical Association as a chief purchasing agent, this was later to become NASA. He was drafted during WWII and served in the Navy primarily in California, organizing supply warehouses. He returned and wanted to leave the busy D.C. area. At that time by his father in law needed someone to take over his businesses in Lynchburg, Va. ie Lynchburg Storage CO and J.K. Spencer Construction Company, since he was moving to Lexington VA.
